Hey Doodledad.  What all do you have done to your Willys?  That is a pretty nice looking Willys.

Thanks man. The L134 is fitted with TBI, dual master cylinder and big drum brakes. rear diff is a Dana 44 Full Floater 30 spline, new 5:13 R&P and a Lock Right in a new HD carrier. The Front is a 27 with a HD carrier and lock right. TC is a T18 w/a 4:1 kit. Trans is rebuilt stock. The lift consists of 2.5 springs, plus a set of shackles I built for rear (kept bending them) 33” Alturo’s on 16X8 steel wheels (running 10 lbs) tire carrier I built with my tubing skills. I believe that’s the most of it.

to each his own. Personally I can't imagine spending the money and time on theses jeeps if they weren't used to their potential. If it's a worry about the strength then maybe it's more of neglect than what the vehicle can handle. The road can be just as hard or harder than off road. 30-45mph compared to 5-10mph off road. As slow as possible, as fast as necessary is nothing when you're keeping up with traffic. There are limits to my off road use but my jeep is a little beefier than stock jeeps. I spent the time and money on mine that I did so it could handle the daily drive as well as off road use. It's unimaginable for me to build a jeep and then not trust it off road or be worried about a scratch / dent. They're badges of honor. I don't have or want a trophy for my jeep. My awards are won without a placing number. If it's a Jeep like Jerry's 45 or Bill Reese's Norm I understand as they're basically 100% orig. although Norm sees way more than his fair share of jeeping.

Come on out to Easter Jeep Safari. We can show those round fenders how it’s done together.  Don’t you get paid for that kind of stuff?

Tell me more about this 4:1 kit in your transfer case.  Was this a large hole Dana 18?  Who makes this kit and where do you get it?  I presume the case had to be altered? Any pics?

No 4 to 1 kits avail, but Tera Low makes kits for D18, just need a D20 empty case to stuff the gears into.

Belleview ol skool winch soon.

I installed one of the prototype Tera Low Dana 18 3.15 to 1 gearsets in my 1945 MB about 20 years ago. I worked for a company(NEAPCO) making driveline parts for Tera so I had direct contact with their engineers. It took 3 transfer cases to make one that worked. I used as many parts from the Browne Lipe Model 18 as I could. For the housing I used a Bronco Dana 20. I still spent 3 hours with a die grinder opening up the Bronco housing to clear the big gear. The t-case is loud. That might be since it was a prototype. It works great. No issues in 20 years.

I’m familiar with the Tera low set, but I’ve heard rumors of other lower gear sets in the 4:1 range and lower so I was hoping doodledad had the scoop on them.

They are not rumors but require and an expensive aftermarket housing.

Looks like you can get 4.86 to 1 in a heavily modified housing. We are talking a lot of machine work and welding. Price probably close to purchasing an Atlas t-case.

I don't know how current this information is, but here is jack O'Brien's contact info:

.... I've never talked to him but some of the members here have.  He has several selections of gear ratios.  anything bigger than 3.6:1 requires a hole to be cut in the case. and new plates attached to the housing for clearance on the gears.  I could be wrong but the way I understand it, you send him your TC and he does all the work including adding a tapered bearing intermediate shaft kit.  I don't think you can buy these as a DIY kit but I could be mistaken.  No web site.  Phone only.

Like most boutique guys, He does VERY high quality work but it is VERY expensive and you get it when you get it.

Edit:  After reading David's link, it looks like you may be able to buy the components as a kit:

" O‘Brien‘s 4-Wheel West makes four replacement gear sets called the JP Rock Eaters for the Model 18 in 3.0:1, 3.6:1 4.10:1 and 4.86:1. The 4.10 and 4.86 kits require significant case modifications. The detailed instructions outline the necessary mods to be performed by competent machinists and certified welders, but O‘Brien‘s can supply modified cases or complete kits."

Just have to give him a call.
