Not ME!

On my hardtop project I have come to the 1/8" thick aluminum under sheeting. Over top of this will go .040" aluminum glued down for a pretty much rivet free smooth top.

I stopped and figured out how much weight I could reduce the top if I took the time to cut 12) 6" holes and drill 64) 1.5" holes in this sheeting. And for all that work I would reduce the top by roughly 5lbs.

Is 5lbs off what will most likely be a 150lb top worth the huge effort to layout and cut/drill all those holes? Not to mention the big 6" holes which would be under the windows would mean that area would be a little more inclined to dent should a tree branch rub up against the side of the top.

The lightening holes would look nice-----  I think I would have used 0.090 for this and just TIGed it.  0.090 will bend in a good 16 gauge brake.  I made my 3B hood with 0.063 over 1/8" reinforcement.  That has proven to be plenty stout.  I welded it up with the spool gun.

Back to the 5 lbs.  Not likely worth it just weight wise but------  Maybe more but smaller holes.

None of the holes will ever be seen as the top is going to be fully insulated and have a interior layer.

If I went crazy and holed everything that wouldn't effect strength I could maybe pull 10 lbs out of the top. But it would take days to do it.

I used to have a French Racing Bicycle a Motobecane Grand Record with custom sew up wheels. And one of the more nuts things guys did back then to try to get their steel framed bikes under 20lbs. Was to drill a hole in each chain link! I always figured I could just leave to top 2oz of water out of my water bottle. It would be easier lol.

That's the same take I have on the ultra light packpacking crowd.  $$$$ on super light pack/tent/bag/stove/etc but 3" of extra girth.
