I agree. There is nothing easy about it. The fill holes are kind of hard to get to and it is one of the messier jobs that keeps a jeep operating.

Just a thought, I used to use a Harbor Freight hand pump and it was a mess. The tubes go everywhere. Use a kerosene stove hand pump now. It is relatively effortless. the solid end stays put in the gallon tractor supply container and the flex end is pretty maneuverable. Also works pretty well emptying the oil filter.

KARMA not 15 min after I posted this this is the scene under CHUG

I had the bright idea to use the squeeze bulbs I use for Brake fluid top off's

well on the first squeeze with the Bulb full of GL-4 the freckin top popped off.

And to top it all off I can not get my 16lb pull magnetic fill plug to thread into the Transmission. The attraction of the magnet is so strong that I can get the first thread lined up.

I'm wondering if one of the small hand crank model airplane transfer pumps would work. I might have to try one.

Get a small (1 or 2 qt) weed killer sprayer at Home Depot or wherever. Cut off the nozzle, slip some hose over the end, pour in the lube, pump it up and squeeze the trigger.
Or just stick the cut end in the fill hole without the hose.

A few years ago I picked up a hand pump that mounts to a 5 gallon bucket and I haven’t had to deal with a mess since. I have about 6’ of flexible hose on it so it reaches everything.

I use an old used oil pump off a 1948 Chevy 216 CID 6 cylinder engine. I drive it with an electric drill. I adapted the pickup tube to 3/8" thin wall hose & the block side outlet hole to accept 1/4" thin wall clear hose. IIRC, The outlet hole was already tapped for 1/2" NPT, if not, it was easy to tap it to NPT. I made it over 45 years ago, so I might be remembering it incorrectly. It really make this job in particular an easy, mess free one.

As you can guess, the pickup tube drops nicely into either a one gallon can or a five gallon bucket. I use it for almost any petroleum product, just not brake fluid! It pumps up to 180 wt gear lube in the summer heat. In the winter, it can be different.

I suspect that almost any oil pump can be adapted for this use. The one out of a Ford 460 can be adapted, that is what we made one out of for my son. As an elevator tech, he uses his fairly often for hydraulic fluid.

I like this idea. We use these things to spray release agent on our truck boxes when paving. I very in tune with using them for other stuff.

I tried to use one of those hardware store 2 gallon pump sprayers for used motor oil. It didn't spray it. It barely pushed it out the tip at all. Maybe removing the tip would have helped but, again, this was only used motor oil. I doubt such a pump sprayer would move gear lube. They work fine for light oils and diesel fuel but I think that's where their usefulness begins to end.

I just use the pump from FLAPS that goes in the 1 gallon jugs. Not too bad in the summer months with 75/140. Cooler or winter months turns it into a chore. I was going to hook up an I-V bag to the jeep and adjust the drip to closely match the output volume of the leaks. Still working on that one.

Having a huge amount of experience with Garden sprayers I don't see how it can't work. I will be removing all but the first 2-3" of the wand and replacing it with a flexible rubber or vinyl hose. As you can generate a LOT of pressure with those pumps I'm sure it will push 90wt gear oil just fine.

The Peanut oil we use as a release agent is about 4 times as viscus as the diesel we used to use and the sprayers do just fine with it spraying it as far as 20 ft in a steam. I need it to go out the end of the hose is all.

I really hadn't thought of it as much of an issue, $8.00 plunger pump from Harbor freight, warn the oil up good and pump it in. If it was a job I had to do on a regular basis I might rig up different. I do raise the driver side of the jeep so I can get under it easier and the oil will also gravity to the transfer case better.

I've been using a little plastic pump that came on a bottle of Mercury lower unit oil years ago. I have to put the oil in the mercury bottle because the cap threads don't seem to fit anything else.  I also have one of these that fits on the large size brake fluid bottle. I think that one came from NAPA.  There is a 3" square access hole in my floor between the seats with a cover screwed over it. My suspicion is that a PO used gravity for this task by feeding a tube down through the floor.

Just got done testing out an ACE 1/2 gallon Garden sprayer $13 on sale. I cut the plastic ward down to 3" beveled the end of it. Then put it in my brake flaring tool clamp and ran a 9/32" drill bit through it to open it up a little. Then with the ward stub still in the clamp I spit on the end of it and shoved a nice flexible piece of Rubber vacuum line on it about 3/4" Put a tiny worm drive hose clamp on it. Assembled the wad/hose to the valve unit. I then dumped about 1/3 of a gallon of GL-4 in it and pumped it up. Tested it out and while the oil doesn't come flying out. Its a nice steady 3/16"D stream. I won't mind laying on my back waiting a few minutes for it to top off or refill. Its that stupid short stroke plastic pump and trying to hold the bottle and the end of the hose etc. That bugs me.

Thanks Terry I think I have a solution.

Bought a NAPA pump, fits a 5 gal bucket of GL4, flexible hose, 12 pumps per qt, no mess. Now the laying on the floor or creeper that I hate. Steve
