Greetings,
Y'all are a wealth of information. I recently bought a 1963 DJ3 and am really new to the Jeep world. I bought it out of the weeds and in the process of cleaning it up I'm finding traces of pink paint under the current blue paint job. Is it possible I have a Surrey? It has none of the Surrey 'tells" in that the upholstery is not two tone or remotely original. It sits on 13' 4x4.5 steel wheels and the drivetrain is not original. It's got a V6 Cologne motor and a manual on the floor shift trans I have yet to identify. Is there any other way to tell if I have a Surrey or not? If the Jeep is so far from original is it worth taking back to Surrey form? Thanks for any guidance y'all may have for me |

22347 is the last of the VIN. The tank is in the rear. It has the center mounted speedo.

From here it looks like it has the correct axles. That’s a big deal if you wanted to bring it back, most of them had 4wd axles put under them.
As for if it’s worth restoring back into a stock surrey. That depends on what you’re willing to put in it versus what you want in the end. If you want to restore it for a investment it’s unlikely you would make much or any profit. If you mostly want a 2wd willys to ride on the road, bringing it back to stock form may be the way to go.It should be a little faster than a stock CJ2A, but I wouldn’t count on it keeping up with modern traffic. If you really wanted a stock 4wd willys to take off road, though it’s fairly easy to swap axles, you would have to change some or all of the transmission engine combo too. |

Just remember....all Surreys are DJs, but not all DJs are Surreys.

Well the Dash looks DJ but the Serial number (if that is the actual serial number is either a 46 2A or a 49 3A neither of which this looks to be) is way outside the DJ range of numbers. |

The windshield, grill, and under side of the fenders would have a lighter color pink than the outer tub and fenders. It's not proof positive but if all the pieces have the same shade of pink, I would say it is not so likely that it's original. Good luck with the search. If it is a Surrey, then chicks and ducks, and geese better scurry. |

The first VIN are 56332. I think that’s the standard first 5 for a DJ? Yes, believe it’s a Spicer 23 axle. I personally don’t have the desire or ability to restore it to stock. But I’d hate to mod it out if it’s a rare unit that should be restored.

According to the Surrey info on the CJ-3A/B page they came with 15x4" wheels and only a little over 1000 were made. So unless Willys completey changed their numbering system or numbered them as DJ-3A's the highest number would be somewhere just north of 11000. The number you give 56332 is not a DJ-3A number the pre 19558 model number was 56337 are you posibly reading the last number incorrectly

56337 DJ3A "OPEN BODY" MODEL year 1963 started with 22140 and ended with 23390. 1251 produced.
56337 DJ3A CALENDAR YEAR 1963 started with 22736 and ended with 23841. Engine numbers would have been shared with other L134 applications such as 8200, 8202 and 8204, but engine serial in 1963 started with 3J173851 and ended with 3J175576. Edited by Joe Friday - 03 Jan. 2022 at 3:52pm |

148 and 144 are trim codes.
(Paint and upholstery codes) I'll see if I can translate them. Update - yes, it appears that 148 is the pink/pink paint code for the surrey.

Wow! Thank you! I was mystified. So. Should I try to sell it to an enthusiast who can restore it? Does it matter since all Surreys are DJs but not all DJs are Surreys? I mean, the only difference is paint and upholstery. Right?
