I've got a leaking rear differential cover and ordered a new gasket from Rockauto, specific to a '46 CJ2a. They list gaskets for either a Dana 25 or Spicer (Dana?) 41. When it arrives it doesn't fit, but it does appear that it would fit the front dif, so I'm figuring it's for a Dana 25. O'Reilly also shows a gasket that is identical to the one I received and doesn't fit.
So here's what my differential cover looks like, it's actually shown upside down: Can anyone recognize this and tell me what differential I have? Thanks. |

Here’s something that’s not what they said.
In spite of the fact that the Bruce hates RTV, I haven’t bought a diff cover gasket for years. I just. Run a bead of RTV around it and bolt it up. I know, blasphemy, but that’s what I do

..what he said X2 👍🏼 Mine never leaked a drop of gear oil, either....until that time I broke both rear axles and the mini-spool. The broken parts got ground up and wedged between the ring gear and diff cover and pryed it away from the housing enough to drip out most of my gear oil. Not really a failure of the RTV, I don’t think. I’m going to go out on a limb and say the gasket would have leaked in that situation also.

Rick space, it was all the ground up granite that caused the cover seal to leak!

OK, Dana 41 it is! That had to be the most definitive answer I've ever gotten off any form. Thanks guys!
As for the RTV sealant, I'm seriously considering it. |
