Hey Everyone,
Today I decided to take my keyed-coil ignition switch apart to clean and inspect it and pulled a Homer by not documenting how it was wired. Doh! There is a single wire that connects to one side from the ammeter, and a pair of wires connected to the other terminal to the fuel gauge and something else. I don't remember which way these wires went. Isn't this just an on/off switch? Does it matter which side the wires connect to? The electrons and I don't get along very well. PS I should add that this is on my bone stock 48 jeep, still 6V and has the original wire harness.

Yes, I do have the service manual with the wiring diagram. And thank you for providing results from your search- some of the diagrams do a good job of clarifying the circuits connected. But should I take the diagrams literally as to the connections shown on the left and right of the switch? I don't want to let the smoke out of something!

Not wanting to cause more trouble, I think someone with "hands-on" can clarify.
FWIW, I've followed mine exactly to help me with my connections.

Yes it matters. As the picture shows, the wire on the left accepts the wire from the ammeter, thats your power "IN". The green wire from the fuel is attached on the right that is a switched component that gets turned "ON" with the key activation. The black wire at the nose of the coil sends power to the distributer when its switched on. Any other wires that are part of your rig are NOT part of the original wiring harness. Those wires would be connected to the switched "ON"...right side of the coil if you had added components to your jeep. Ya Follow?

Yes, I follow that. Thank you! I will attach the wire from the ammeter (the hot wire) to the left side of the switch as in the photo, and the other wires to the right side. Next time, lots of photos before disassembly!

From the Autolite Service Manual, in case it helps anyone else with wiring concerns.
