Hi Folks,
Seems appropriate to post this bulletin here. The 134 crankshafts that used the rope seal had little reason to maintain any degree of accuracy in the dimension of the crank at the seal surface. They have been measured with as much as 15/1000 variation in diameter at the ared located between the flywheel flange and the slinger on the crank. Again, using the rope seal was no problem for this variation. However if we are to use one of the newer style lip seals then this variation IS a problem. There have been some mismanufactured seals sold as well. Be aware....Many crank/seal failures have been documented as a result of wrong clearance issues. The answer has been to measure the crank and have that seal surface area machined Round and True to a dimension as listed in this bulletin...2.3 OD is good according to an experienced machine shop/builder. The machineing process would have to be done by someone who can grind crankshafts. It requires a very narrow stone to grind and will usually cost some extra to have done by the shop due to set up and tooling expense.
The image is a liitle hard to read...hope it is clear enough to you folks.
Edit: 1/28/09 This subject is still under some scrutiny by me and others. Please consider this data in my post as information only. I did not want to delete this post for informational purposes.

Good Morning,
FWIW, I have installed a NOS Rope Seal without any problems to date. Thanks, Low, for your help!
GaryArf has installed a Napa Rear Main Rope Seal that was used as a replacement in another engine. He has had no problems either. Napa #BS5155. Thanks Gary for that number!
Because of material changes, the old seal as Low shows is no longer available except as NOS. Asbestos was a key component then. Heat build up and durability of these materials is now the concern. I would guess that the synthetics being used are very good.
The Felpro Gasket set sold now comes with a Rope Seal. There were some problems associated with some of the lip seals they were providing previously. I do not know how this particular new rope seal has been performing.
I do not know what these new rope seal are made of.
