Can you bore out a L-134 to increase horsepower? If so how much over?

Its generally accepted that .060" over is it. This results in a 140cu in engine. The increase in compression ratio and small increase in cu in. Will get you only a very small increase. If you shave the head at the same time the resulting compression ratio increase will find you about 8HP

An overdrive, smart thinking for low range goes a long way. This and a buck will get you a cup of coffee!

RMD - You could put a Kiser Supersonic head on you L134 and that will get you a few more HP. But the max with the full Kiser Supersonic set up is like 6 or 8 HP. Stock is 60 PH. Beyond that you might read what Mark did on his Chug build. Not sure how many HP Chug has, but it has to be close to the Max the L134 can produce.

I giggle everytime I see someone use the terms "L134 and horsepower" in the same sentence. :)

When you think of 6 - 8 hp it doesn't sound like much but when you think of it as percent, 10 percent sounds pretty good.

Anyone wants to trade unsleeved standard bore or 20 over L134 blocks for bored out 60 overs in the quest of 6HP I'd be happy to save you the machine shop costs...
ETA.. I may have an 80 over laying around if you really wanna pump it up... or a 40 if you want something more streetable just sayin'

I fully agree, I personally would like to have a original in perfect condition also, but don't have any problem boring one to bring it back to into service and picking up a few hp is just a bonus. The one I put in a couple weeks ago had to be bored .040 to clean them up but I am happy that it could be salvaged to a good running engine. There is just something about these old jeeps and keeping them like the original I like . Jim

I haven't been in a hurry in 30 years, and my feeling about it is the L134 has plenty of power for these little Jeeps, especially at bottom end where it matters most. Besides that there is just something I love about driving along listening to that little flathead rumble. As is often said they weren't meant to go anywhere fast, but will go just about anywhere slow.
When I drive mine people notice it. Last Friday I pulled over to let some traffic pass, and a minivan pulled over too because the family inside were very interested in the Jeep. The first thing the man asked was "Does it have the original four cylinder engine?" and it pleased me to be able to answer "Yes it does". His two young son's wanted to give it a closer look and when I opened the hood one of them said "Wow, that is cool!" and the other asked "Is this a WW2 Jeep?" I told him it was a 1947 civilian version of the WW2 Jeep and he was grinning big while he looked all over the Jeep and I told the two boys they could climb in if they wanted, which they did.

If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

I know someone in the past had talked about reground cams to get a bit more torque, so that is an idea as well. I cleaned up the intake and exhaust manifolds with a bur and sanding roll. I haven't been to the dragstrip yet, but I'm sure it's worth a 1/10 in the quarter.

Yes, of course, however given the design and displacement of these old engines I doubt it would be enough for you to notice it. My advice is to make the most of what is available. Strive to get your carb and distributor working and adjusted to perfection. I'll take smooth and responsive engine producing 60 hp over an sketchy engine that makes 65 every now and again.
