I removed my new cup holder after a test drive because it opened up when I didn't want it to and it rattled.....oh well...on to bigger and better things...

Well...I got tired of messing with my analog tachometer so I broke down and ordered a Tiny Tach. It's a nice little tachometer and hour meter. I was initially opposed to having a digital tachometer in my old analog Willys but sometimes a guy just needs to give in to technology. A very simple installation and it works great. I used the old bracket for the cup style tach and just zip tied the Tiny Tach into place. I may fab up a new bracket at some other time. I think it looks OK...not as nice as the analog....but much more accurate.

Hi Mikes half cab, Yes I am. I have an old Warn overdrive so it works pretty well. Daniel Buck is running a 4 spd with overdrive in his Kubota Jeep if I am not mistaken. Kind regards, |

First time user here. Thanks for your posts. I have a very stock 48 cj2a. I often have an issue with vapor lock/carb boiling in the summer. No problems when driving, just restarting after having parked for a short while. Adding a marine fuel primer bulb may have helped, but rough running after a hot start makes me think I also have carb boiling issues. Always run a premium no ethanol fuel. Will start and run fine if given ample time to cool down. I notice in your picture of the old motor that you have a plate protecting the carb from engine heat. Do you have an opinion about the value of it? Thank you.

Hi Hyer7,
My Dad made that plate out of aluminum many many years ago. It appeared to work to an extent. He had also put some insulating wrap on the fuel line to try to stop the boiling. I still had some trouble with the fuel boiling, even with the carb plate. I would give you the plate free of charge if I still had it but it was on the engine when I sold it to a board member. |

I just saw this stuff in the "Tax Refund Buyers Guide" of the latest (May 2017) Four Wheeler magazine.
It's called Thermoflect Sleeve. Haven't tried it, but thought of my some on the page here that have mentioned vapor lock problems Also, do you have the thick gasket under your carb? Here's a picture from Walcks web site. It's supposed to insulate the carb somewhat. Also, just as courtesy to Larry, it might be good to move any further vapor lock discussion to a new thread in the tech questions section. |

Well.......I am very sad to report that my 22 year old Optima red top battery finally needed replacement....
I still held a charge and would start the Jeep just fine.....the seal on the negative post started leaking.... I reckon my Dad and I got our moneys worth out of the battery..... I ordered a new Red top Optima to replace it.....hope this one lasts as long...pretty certain it won't.

Web site claims the Red Top has "Up to 3X the life". I'd say you got to the very top end of that statement. Hmmm...when my cheap wally mart battery dies, I might have to look in to one!

John...I actually considered doing that since it was still holding a charge....but I decided to play it safe.

I got tired of every lead-acid battery I ever used leaking acid all over everything. Jeeps or motorcycles, they all leaked. It's Optima or some other sealed battery for me. However, I'm currently not too happy about the Optima in Ol' Unreliable. It's the 2nd one I've had in it and it's only a few years old and doesn't seem to want to hold a charge. I guess I need one of those battery tender things.

That's the key - a tender. I have two red tops. One is going on year 4. The other, year 8.

Latest update from Kubota Jeep land:
I noticed a slight dent in my oil filter on the Jeep. It was mentioned early on in my build by a fellow board member that there might not be enough clearance between the front differential and the oil filter. Looks like that was the case. So I ordered Kubota part number 1A021-3229-0 and installed a much smaller filter...the equivalent of a Fram PH3614. Much smaller in diameter and seems to work fine. I change my oil frequently so the reduced filter size should not be an issue.

Larry, on my Kubota Pickup project, I used M38 robber stop bumps on the frame with 1/2 inch rubber spacers to stop the differential sooner. I hope it works. We'll see next summer when the body is painted and on. John
