    Posted: 02 Oct. 2022 at 11:46am
Just finished re installing my overdrive unit.  It looks good except for a constant drop of gear oil on the head of the bottom bolt of the overdrive. Wipe it off and it reappears within a day,  how much oil is lost while driving is unknown, but eventually it will become a problem.  Thinking about removing bolts and adding threadlocker or do I need to drain oil and then use the threadlocker.  Any other ideas

Does the bolt have the proper O-ring equipped washer?

Proper hardware is the best choice. Assuming the hardware is correct then I believe a thread sealer would be a better choice than a thread locker.

The bolt with the special sealed washer is at about the 2:00 position.  The bolt I am referring to is at 6:00 postion

The original Warn had all 5 washers with O ring.

At sometime between Warn and Saturn/ATV they cheaped out.

Interesting Keith, O/D is an almost 50 year old Warn and never had more than 1 O ring bolt. Just rebuilt by Herm and came back with only one.  Would O ring bolts be better than thread sealer?  Do I need to drain T/C to use thread sealeror can I just remove one bolt at a time and add thread sealent

John,

I would drain the oil and swab out the holes with a patch on a gun cleaning rod.

If you don't drain the oil it will drain out of the lower holes when you remove the bolts anyway. The only hole that really needs the sealing washer is the one near the shifter as that bore is open to the case. The other bolts should have sealer on the threads. I use Permatex #2 or Aviation sealer.

If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

IME, It is a crap shoot to just pull one bolt & reinstall it with Permatex #2. I like to drain the gear lube out of the box & do one bolt at a time. Clean both the bolt & it's hole with acetone & reinstall it with Permatex #2.

OTOH, while I doubt if it would seal without clean surfaces, You could try it without the draining & cleaning processes, what do you have to lose by trying it? Just a bit of time & effort. Your call.

Take this from an old oil leak “specialist” (not my choice, but I did a lot of that work. I once asked the service manager why I got so many oil leak jobs after I was no longer the fng. He said, “Because you’re good at it. We dont have comebacks.”) - Where the oil is hanging or dripping is seldom the actual point of leakage. Oil leak tracking is almost an art.
