    Posted: 24 Mar. 2023 at 10:26pm
It's been a long winter and my shop is unheated so I haven't been doing much on the jeeps this winter.  With the warmer temps recently I've been getting the itch to do something... anything to them!

The other day I was "internetting" and I saw some old car with a vintage license plate frame and I thought "That looks kinda cool...." so I did some research and found some on eBay.  The ones on eBay were like 60 bucks and I thought "That's not kinda cool..." so I kept looking.  I found some that were close at summit racing for like 20 bucks, but I really liked the text that some of the vintage ones had for old car dealers or something like that.  Then I thought I might be able to make something that might be kinda cool....  I know it's a small, trivial thing, but I was bored and wanted to make something so come on a journey with me.

Searching the Google, I found that these are the kind I like.  That rounded corner design with a text box at the bottom.

I took a picture of my plates and measured them, then went into Corel Draw and drew up something that I liked.  I imported the picture of my plates and scaled everything up the correct size so I could see what they would look like.  Since the old timey plates were more rounded than todays rectangular-ish plates, I had to thicken the entire frame to hide the corners.
I'm ok with that I think.

Next I loaded the cut file onto my CNC plasma cutting table software...

Before I started cutting up steel, I will sometimes have my CNC draw up my design on cardstock with a pen or sharpie to see if the design will work.  I wanted to make sure the square corners would be hidden well, so I attached my pen tool first.  This is just 2 pieces of PVC pipe with a sharpie poking through a hole in the bottom, then I literally just use masking tape to stick it to my table.  It's not very high tech, but it works great!  I threw a sheet of cardstock on there and weighted it down with some chunks of steel then hit go and watched the artist do his thang.

I put it on top of my plates to make sure it covers what I want and don't want.  Looks good to me!

I could also be crazy and put the text box at the top if I wanted.

I cleaned them up and sprayed some paint on them, but I forgot to take a pic.  I wanted to do chrome but I couldn't find any at the store.  I also heard the chrome spray paint is pretty jankity looking so I may do some more research on that... or not.  If anyone has had any good results with a brand of chrome spray paint, let me know.

While the paint was drying I used my vinyl cutter to cut out some text to put on the plates.  I cut out some as decals and some as stencils for painting.

Here's how they turned out.  The top one is chrome (metallic aluminum) for my painted 46 and 48.  The middle one I painted ODG (the color looks way off in this pic!) for my restored '44 GPW, and the bottom one is for my patina 46.

I'm happy with them.  I wish it was chromed like the old-timey ones are so hopefully I'll find some good chrome paint.  I guess I could try black too... I have Historic Military Vehicle plates coming so the blue/red on the middle plates will soon be ODG/white.
I need to put them on four jeeps and I think it'll be nice that they all say Flatfender Farms on them!  I know it's not really necessary, but it was cheap, quick and easy to do, and I think it looks better than un framed plates at least.

Plus I got my itch scratched to work on something jeep related.
