put the locker in my dana 25. Reassembled everything. The unit won't release like described. The one I put in the rear 41 works fine. The only difference I'm finding is there should be 5/32" between the halves when installed. I'm getting 3/16". Does that mean I need to shim to achieve that. There was a shim on each side spider gear which I put on the corresponding sides of the locker. Could it be I need more to bring it in closer. Kinda confused. The rear was no problem. As always thanks for any help with this.

Yes. And this would also explain your hub issue. 1/16 may not sound like a lot....but it's a lot.

X2 on replacing the side gear shims, it has to be within the manfacturers specs or it will not function correctly. Hold your gap to the smaller end of the required gap for longevity.  I have had my lockright in my dana 25 since 2003 and still works like it should

Thanks for that reassurance. I'm new to this and don't want to mess up. I'm ordering shim tonight.

Are you sure your pins are fully seated?  If they were like mine and Stan’s the holes they set in needed to be deburred in order for them to fully seat as designed.  Refer to your older post on page 2 here:  https://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/dana-25-locker_topic41199_post400210.html?KW=Locker#400210

If the pins fully seat and your gap is larger than spec, it could mean you need some shims, but this shouldn’t keep the locker from ratcheting.  IIRC, the larger the gap, the easier it should ratchet, and thus less likely to “lock up” when needed.  Those 4 springs are the only resistance to ratcheting, unless it is under driven power and the cross pin spreads each half outward.  I can’t get mine to ratchet unless I have one wheel off the ground and spin it by hand (increased leverage).  If both wheels are off the ground, then you have to spin one quickly to overcome the resistance of the springs/cogs in the locker.

shims on back order at Kaiser. Do tore my spare 25 apart to try those. Worn even worse. Found shims at summit racing. Will get her together when they come. Checked pin seat all good. The space between the rod and splined halves was way off to so it's the shims. Hopefully

New thrust washers came and installed. Book says 50 mile break in. Is that with the hubs locked in but differential not ingaged or the other way around ? Kinda confused.  The front axles aren't the same type.

this is the type on the side that is now hard to switch from free to lock. Tried shimming. Didn't help. Could dressing off some of the top help? Or am I thinking wrong?

Was this axle shaft the same that was in there prior to the locker swap?

Also, what does the end of the axle shaft look like - hub side?

Were these hubs on there prior to the locker swap? (you may have already stated that)

Regarding the hub, I've hit more than my share of shafts with an abrasive disc. As long as you don't go too deep it's not an issue. But I'm kind of a root cause guy. There is something else at play here.

As for break in - front axle - I'd run it around for a few mile with the hubs locked, then forget about it.

they are the same as before locker install. That side was stiff before and had been shimmer. The bolts were just over hand tight. I was thinking of a good wash out of hub, new grease and a1/8" dress off of axle tip. Thats not too much?
