Hello,
My father passed away a couple years back and I inherited his M38. He took the vin tag off the rear fender for safe keeping and I am unable to find it. Is there another place the VIN may be located? Is there another way of registering it or ascertaining the VIN number. Also if anyone is parting one out, I need a couple things to get started

Do you have the dash plates? The MCXXXXX number that was on the wheelhouse will or should be there to. It's a serial number technically, VINs didn't start till mid 50's I believe. In rare cases, you may run into the MC# randomly stamped into the frame. Mine actually did on the top flat of the frame between the grill and the bumper on the driver side.

Actual vin numbers were not used until the early 70's

The MC number on the engine deck is not the serial number for the Jeep unit.

I didn't know if there was a way to cross that number back to the chassis. I am guessing not

I don't know the NH rules. Has this ever had a title? If so, the number might be on it. If no previous title, you might be able to use the MC engine number to title it.
There is really no way to figure out the original Willys number based on the engine number. You can probably find a range...assuming this is the original MC engine. Hawk

Since you live in nh buy another serial number plate from online. Nh does not require a title. The question is is you m38ban early or late one? Photos would help.
