Back when I first got my ‘48 (and didn’t know better) I bought a running MB motor as a back up. I am seriously considering installing it now if it wouldn’t require too much modification. I know that it’s chain drive can not gear but that doesn’t matter, it’s about the motor mounts and whatever else would be required to make it a drop in. Before anybody says “sell it and buy a 2A motor” I have to confess that it has the usual crack under the distributor so it’s pretty much worthless even though it runs good.

Not worthless by a long shot, that common crack can be fixed several ways.
The engine mounts of a MB engine and a CJ2A are the same, and no modifications are needed to drop it in your Jeep.

If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

Definitely a drop in swap. Cracks can be fixed in many cases. A lot of people are purists and want MB engines put back into MB restorations. I have an M38 engine in my 2A. Works fine. Run it.

By worthless I did mean I think it’s a throw away, I mean I don’t think that I could sell it for much. The crack doesn’t concern me much. This motor was sold to me by an unscrupulous dirt bag whom I foolishly trusted. But that’s water under the bridge some several years ago.

My CJ has an amphibious GPA motor, screw it, swap it in.

Out of general curiosity, what day/year is the MB engine?

19, at the moment I am 200 miles away from that motor but I will be there next week. If you hit me up next week to remind me I’ll look. Thanks, Don

If somebody will tell me where to find the build date on the MB motor I will get it for Cargo.

Thanks for your effort on this. The casting date is on the passenger side of the block, toward the rear under the starter motor. The assembly date is stamped on the flat surface of the block where the oil pan mates to the block. Unless the pan is off, you probably can’t see it.
This thread has some good reference photos: https://forums.g503.com/viewtopic.php?t=285955 Sincerely, John

I wrote this down before I left town last night; on the passenger side cast in are the following numbers; 8-22 638632-W4 A NI-CR. On the drivers side right behind the fuel pump it has 383 3

I’m presuming the 8/22 to be August 22, but I’m not certain if that would be ‘44, ‘45, or possibly even ‘46. Is there an MB or CJ serial number stamped on the boss behind the oil filter?
