So I need to blast gawd knows how many decades of paint and rust off the Gas can holder I plan to use. It was on CHUG in the mid 60's. SO I get the AIr compressor going I plug in all the hoses I drag my shop vac over to the Blasting cabinet I hook it up I wipe the 1/4 of dust off the Blast cabinet (it sits just outside my Shop Man door in the carport. And I start

THIS BLASTER SUCKS I don't know if its the Eastwood Gun I bought to replace the 30 year old Speedaire one I couldn't find new tips for. Or the sand I got or the fact my compressor is getting old and tired or the fact its like 38° out.

But my fingers are cold and this is going to take a LONG time.

Are you getting ice build up in your gun?  I have that problem when I'm trying to use just about any air tools when it is a little above freezing.  The pressure release is enough to freeze any water in the system.

No ice I checked the gun. Pretty sure its the Media is damp its been in that wood box cabinet for maybe a year. I found out there's a Farm Supply 20 min away and they carry Black Diamond (coal slag) Never tried it before. But for $9.99 for 50lbs its hard to not like the price. So I'll dump out the old weird sand I got talked into last time and try this. Can't be any worse and at least its dryer.

Mark,
I have good luck with no. 3 sand from the masonry supply store.

I push the sand through a Sandy-Jet homeowner special and running a 3-hp 30scfm @ 70psi with a 60gal tank.   You might take your sand into the living room near the heater to dry it out.
and warm those pinkies while your drying sand.   You could spread the sand on a tarp.   :)

You will find the Black Diamond to be an excellent choice 👍🏽 It does break down faster than other media choices.... On heavily painted items I use a paint stripper first, napa has an airasol stripper that works well, cuts down on blasting time if you remove the layers as well as dust.

I should finish this thread out. Swapped out the media for the Black Diamond coal slag stuff and the job went much better still a huge amount of area to blast. I managed to get it all to clean metal and the gas can got soaked in Phosphate rust treatment and painted with Rustoleum Flat White Primer 2 good coats then 4 coats of Apple Red (the White base is required to get a good color on the Red) It came out with a nice semi gloss finish and I wrapped the edge with some rubber edge trim. Its already bolted up and doing its job.

I think I will go back to the Farm store and grab 3-4 more bags of the Black Diamond to have it on hand.
