Just got this trailer. No data plate. I was told that it is a 1944. The gentleman had the front replaced and drove it behind his 42'willy's in parades |

That looks like an early T3-C that's had a lunette added. It has the hole for the BO switch, but it has the early tailgate configuration (and in real nice shape). It's possible that it's a T3 with a added tailgate, but that looks too good for a conversion. That would put the year at 45 or early 46, too bad the front panel is gone, that's where the data plate would be, but being that early there may be a number under the spring shackle. Does it have shock mounts on it? Civilian ones didn't but the military ones did. Also the militarys had parking brakes. Nice looking trailer. Oh, almost forgot my manners, welcome to the site.

Welcome Rick,
You can look on the left front spring hanger gusset for an ACM number which would aid in dating the trailer for our database.
ACM Number: American Central MFG. made the tub/frame assembly. They put a number on the gusset plate under the left front spring hanger so remove it and wire-wheel the gusset looking for numbers about 7/16" in height. You may find a "B" in front, behind or below the number.

Since all the civvy trailer guides mention the fulton coupler, the tailgate, the stake pockets and the 3 vs 4 side tarp hooks as trademarks of the T3-C civvy trailer and all seem to agree the first civvy T3-C's were built from military leftover stock then do all these changes occur at the start of civvy T3-C production or were they gradually phased in? It makes factory economical sense to leave many of the military features as they were to reduce civvy production costs. I would asume the 3 vs 4 side tarp hools would not have made a big difference and would have been left as 4 untill those tubs were used up.

Wes,
I think the "features" were phased in as stock ran out from wartime production, if you look at the T3-C site data list, a pattern emerges on the major changes, still somewhat murky on the more obscure ones though (shape of the boxing plates on the drawbar, change in the drawbar casting, change in the mounting of the drawbar to the tub, etc. ) These are interesting details to me from a historical sense. |

Rick emailed me the factory photos and when I get home from this TDY I'll get them posted proto on the bantamt3cpage.
With Rick being a resident of Butler, I also plan to try and get him or someone to research the local library or historical society for any clues on records, pictures or history of any sort. Edited by 48cj2a - 17 June 2009 at 11:31pm |

I'm down the road a bit more, but hope to travel to Butler sometime soon to do just that!
I've been told that they have one on display at the little local historical center for the town
as I have already talked to them. While they know what the Bantam cars/trailers are/were,
not everyone there is real up on their history beyond that from what I could gather.

Joe,
I'd like more pictures of the one at the society and the serial number as well.
Any help you can lend would be greatly appreciated and property credited on the BantamT3C Page.

Art, I called the historical society today and they are only open from 12 t o 5 on fridays. I'm unable to make it today. I'll try for next friday... work pending. I cannot understand why so little of this historical information is known or has been retained in this community. Let alone the original factory not acquired. It has been sitting idle for 7 years. I talked with a co-worker who worked at plant 2 (armco/AKSteel). He said the building was falling in disrepair when he worked there. The engineering building itself sat pretty much vacant. They stored stuff on the first floor mainly. Again, if needed. I 'll try to make it next friday and obtain the photographs you need. Butler County Historical Society (724 283 8116). I recovered my ACM # . It is 154979. The trailer was originally red from my guess. |

Thanks Rick,
No hurry, you are our best source since you live in the area.
If you know a high school age student that might we willing to research the library for info and get us some info, photo copy document or anything simular I'd make it worth their while for some good detective work.
