I got the drums and hubs off the front and rear and drums off the front.   Need to get the hubs off the front.  Just needed a bigger hammer!

Where are the wheel studs on the rear brake drum? You are going to need them to get the brake drum off the rear axle shaft.

Stop!!! Get a shop manual or download the section on brake service from this forum. Use the advanced search function to find it.

While people on this forum don't mind helping out in a pinch, you should have already read the service manual to at least be familiar with the basics of the procedure. Please do yourself a favor and read the manual first.

*********************************

....Never mind. I now see that the drums are outboard of the axle flange on both axles.

Still, you should have and use a shop manual for all service work.

Have you adjusted the brake shoes in as far as you can? The drums may be hanging up on the shoes.

I am sure that you know that those three straight headed screws need to come out as you have drilled them out on the other drum.

Heat & penetrating fluid as well as patience are needed here.

But... How did you remove the wheel studs on the rear hubs with the hubs still on the axle and why did you do that ??

Agreed, shop manual is your best friend. Normally tapping the side off the drum with a hammer as you turn in will free it up. After the adjuster is turned all the way in of course. Wondering also why you knocked the wheel studs into the drum?

Read up on the lockouts too.  And get the right socket for the spindle nut and don’t beat it with a punch and hammer. You may have to if already messed up from the last person who was on it.
To get it off. But use the socket to put new ones back on. Lots of good videos by folks to watch and some really bad ones. Choose wisely

Metal shaper.  G503 and others are good

You will also now have to pull the rear hubs to replace those wheel studs, and it is going to be difficult to do without them there to attach the puller.

Read the manual, watch metalshaper videos, to make sure you understand how to re-install the rear hubs. If you do it wrong you will split the hubs and create a dangerous condition.

The bigger hammer was a joke!  And actually, I do have a manual and I have read enough posts on this forum to know better to get a manual first, or else it will be strongly suggested Wink.  I almost included that fact in my original post.  It is a brand new manual that arrived on Friday.  Notice how clean it is?  (new guy to this vehicle) Perhaps I am misunderstanding what I am reading in the manual, but Q-9 indicated to punch out the studs (serrated bolts) to remove the drum.  I did get the drums and hubs off of the back. The drums were rusted to the hubs.  In the end, I needed more force and penetrating oil.  I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing something.   I know that I need to get a 2" Socket (need to confirm size) to get the front hubs off.  Don't worry, Don't plan to use punches to remove the nuts.  I guess that I need to figure out if I can reuse the studs...

Shoes were adjusted all the way in and the flat head screws were removed with a screw driver and not drilled out.  Am I missing something? Maybe the PO has drilled something out?

Q-9 is correct IF you had a 2A with stock brakes with the hubs to the outside of the drums. Q-9 is describing removing a drum from a hub, not removing the assy from the axle. What you have is a 3A or M38 style brake with the drums to the outside. (a good thing in my opinion). What jeep are you working on?

This is what I am working on...  I have believed it to be a 2A frame, with an F head.

You will get still good use from the universal jeep svc manual provided you temper the written word with what you actually have on the ground. Money well spent.

METALSHAPER videos on Youtube.  Excellent!  A MUST watch for anyone working on axles/engines and apparently body.  Great detailed videos that are full of information!  Thank you for the suggestion.  We will be careful to properly install things.

" I know that I need to get a 2" Socket (need to confirm size) to get the front hubs off."

A 2" socket isn't the right one. The nut size is 2 1/16 inches .Order a front hub socket from one of the jeep parts suppliers (Walck's, Kaiser-Willys, etc.) It will fit inside the hub where the heavy wall regular socket often won't. Sometimes your FLAPS might have one in stock depending on local demand.

I ordered a front spindle bearing wrench socket from KW last night.  Thanks for the replies.
