In the course of a disc brake conversion I put a bright light on the left front spindle area and while there I noticed two small symmetrical bumps in the crud and weld spatter that had the potential to be rivets. After some rough scraping and last minute sneaking up on it with fine sandpaper and acetone, I was able to read the original frame tag. Turns out I own CJ2a 88091. A 1947 according to Kaiser Willys serial number data, NOT a '49 as shown on the AZ title. Happy I found this before I registered it in Maine.

How does having a vehicle that does not match your title make it better? Granted nice to know what you have.

I'm in the same position. Bought the jeep two years ago with a title, but not knowing at the time to compare it with the frame/body tags. My title says 45682, but the frame and firewall tags say 44313. I sent the paperwork and a check off to Oregon DMV six weeks ago hoping they'll issue me a new title. Still waiting.

Some jurisdictions used the engine serial # to title vehicles. 45682 looks to be within the percentage difference one would expect to see when comparing the difference between the original CJ2A serial # and the original engine serial #.

In Maine we don't need anything beyond a signed bill of sale, and evidence of insurance, to register a vehicle older than 1995. So I can register it either way. Having the frame tag will allow me to apply for a title with a vin that relates to the vehicle. Having no evidence of a vin, or serial number, makes applying for a title more of an issue.

I'm still crossing my fingers a little. In 1976 I bought a 1953 Dodge pick up truck for $50.00. It had a Mississippi title. When I went to register it in PA it turned out the it had been stolen in Texas in 1954. It took six months of back and forth between me, Texas and the original owner, (who luckily din't want it back 22 years later), to sort it out. The deciding factor to get the original owner to write the required letter to Texas and PA was that I hadn't been born yet in 1954, so it couldn't have been me that stole it in the first place.
