Do you have any other photos of the block?  I have never seen a special like this.  I am wondering if there is anything different in the block or the components it used.  Is is a gear drive engine?

update, the engine does not have a "build date" stamped anywhere on the oil pan rail, it has been cleaned with a mild acid, and you can clearly see the factory grinding marks, and single numbers stamped at the corners. it does have Hubbard freeze plugs, and the factory WO fiber gears.

according to Dino's website, and a link Sean sent me, on the passenger side, at the top, and rear, near the head mounting surface, is a boss, and they show a "Y", and it is labelled as an "unkown" marking. Well, in this area, the "special" engine has a stamping mark that is a "circle", with WO stamped inside of that.

ok, an update on this weird engine, to refresh, it came out of a '48, the serial numbers stamped on the water pump boss look factory stamped, and correlate in sequence with the serial #plate/toe board#/body tag# plates i have..and it has an oval MB style pad behind where the distributor goes..

ok, so here is the update..and mind you, i realize things could have been swapped out throughouth the years..however, in the plastic tub of the parts removed from this engine when it was disassembled, is the Autolite distributor..BUT, it is the MB IAD 4008..

Could/Would have Willys used a "buyback" engine as late as '48..

this engine, showing true signs of being in the '48, but having earlier parts and casting signs of an earlier engine, really have me puzzled..

i am going to try once more, to look for and try to find an assemble date....
