Just stumbled into this trailer.  Wikipedia didn't really help much.  So I've come for your expert help.  What can you guys tell me about my new-to-me M416?

The M416 was designed for the M151 Ford "Mutt" jeep used during the Vietnam War. It was produced by four or five different contractors, including Johnson Furnace, Jones Co. and Stevens Mfg. Not sure whether all models (there was an A1 and A2 variant) had brakes and hydraulic shocks, but some did. Basically the M416 was the result of somebody in US Army automotive command realizing the WWII and Korean War vintage Bantam MBT and M100 1/4-ton trailers were quite good and didn't need to be completely re-engineered for the 1960s. This rarely happens with military vehicle planning, by the way.
Like their predecessors, the M416s are robust little trailers. They're overbuilt compared with most commercial civilian trailers. Some 2A, 3A and early CJ5 owners don't like the squared-off fenders and slotted wheels. I really don't mind them, and when I finish my 2A resto I would seriously consider a 416.

I've never compared the two much past the square vs. Round fenders and different wheels but just wondering if they are close enough to 'dress up' as a Bantam?

Maybe I shouldn't ask that .....my apologies just curious, probably would never do it. Just asking for conversational purposes.

Chad,

Most would not know the difference once round fenders are swapped and if you added a couple of the repop rear side supports and duplicated the Bantam tailgate it would be even harder to see the differences with exception to the hitch casting. Which is exactly what I would do on this one since the rear is cutout and the rear sides are loose without any support.

Thanks for the info.  I actually like the squared off fenders, so they'll stay.  I'm still undecided about the rear wall.  Don't know if I want to put in a tailgate for practical purposes, or wall it off for a more original look.  Time will tell.  Bed has a few random holes that have been drilled in it.  But there are ZERO rust holes.  The two drain plugs are still there and appear to be complete.  There is no brake handle, but there does appear to be a brake cable that comes together toward the front.  The indents in the front wall match the indents in the Bantam front wall and tailgate.

Thanks Art.....that's exactly what I was thinking but had never discussed it or checked into it.....have passed up a few of those (primarily because I didn't need another trailer in the year.

That would make it more 'doable' then, thanks for the info.

Just my $0.02, but tailgates really come in handy for hauling anything the requires unloading with a shovel or pitchfork. The WWII 1/4-ton trailers were designed without tailgates to give them a better chance of floating when the landing craft stopped short of the beach. In my experience they're a pain for most practical uses.

That's the battle... originality/simplicity vs practicality.  I do like the idea of a tailgate.
