Same here. The 23 was used in only a small number of 2As, very early ones. Could be worth a lot of bux to someone restoring one of those. If you're certain the Jeep's a '48, you might make some money selling that axle, if you're into it.

Well it's definitely a Spicer 23, found the "23" casting mark on the bottom right web of the housing. It also has the heavy cast diff cover that says "USE HYPOID OIL ONLY". A little research seems to show that this axle was used mostly on the MB's I think. It's a seized up, non-rolling, broken axle mess right now, but I think the cast cover is pretty cool. Looks like I'm in the market for an offset 41 or 44.

If it has 5.38s, it was not used in an MB.
They were 4.88. It would be originally in one of the first 12,000 or so 2As. Even in bad shape, it might be worth something to someone trying to do a faithful restoration of one those very first 2As. Whether to replace it with a 41 or a 44 is your call. They both have their fans. It could come down to which one becomes available first.

Love the patina on the old girl.
It's amazing what can be achieved with some TLC and some $$. Have a great time restoring her. Looking forward to seeing progress pics and the end result. Congrat's on the purchase. |
