    Posted: 17 Feb. 2018 at 12:42am

Just today on the way home I saw 3 rigs using these type of straps to hold their side-by-sides down in their trailers!

All them were trucks with a lifts, oversized tires with all the add on glam crap to go along with it.  Idiots.

I see it all the time to, half the time theses straps are slack and floppy in the breeze as if the load shifted.

Sort of pisses me off.

rant......

Brett

Okay, I am in the process of getting ready to trailer Ol' Red for the first time in both our long lifetimes in a couple of months...got any recommendations for tie down?

And while you are at it, where are the best locations for tie down points on a jeep while trailering it?

I know the tie downs in your picture are a POS, but I would like recommendations from someone who has lots of trailering experience.

Guide me, Oh Wise Ones...

I started a thread a while back here:

I have 4 of these axle straps and I tie down in an x pattern to opposite corners with 5000lb Aircraft Cargo Ratchet Straps on each to a d-ring. I do use the cheapo above as extra insurance on the windshield when folded down:

Totally concur.  Get the real thing.  The most common place you see the cheap ones being used is lying on the side of the road as a notice of, or memorial to impending catastrophic failure.

Love my Mac's. Tighten them down after driving an hour or so.

  • always used the cheap heavy duties. Then I bought a set of Macs and will never go back not worth saving a couple bucks on tie downs when your talking about your multi thousand dollar Jeep and potentialy the lives of those behind you do not cheap out!! I like to tie down to the frame when there is a solid point if not use axle straps around the axle and heavy ratchet straps to that in a x pattern remember triangle is the strongest shape and best way to strap in. Side note either tie to frame or axle not half and half.
if you cant fix it with a hammer you must have an electrical problem

When I looked into having mounts installed on the bumper/draw bar so I wouldn't have to go under my jeep to get to the axle I was told that the ties needed to be on the un-sprung side to allow the body to flex. Maybe I was wrong?

If you tie to the frame you need to tie it down tight.  Otherwise the Jeep can bounce on the trailer, putting slack in the tie-downs, and then banging into them when it comes up again.  But on the plus side, then nothing moves so it's more stable.

If you tie to the axles you are letting the Jeep's  frame and body bounce on its suspension without putting shock loads on the tie downs.  But on the minus side, the additional movement can lead to spooky situations.

So as rocnroll said, opinions vary which is best.

Personally I go to the axles as well.

A friend had to retrieve a pickup from the mountains so a neighbor went up with a trailer and they got the PU on it. Don deflated the tires and chained it down around the axles and then reinflated the tires. I'm sure that truck never moved.
