I cleaned off 70 years of grease and dirt of my rear axle during new brake line installation. I uncovered numbers on the differential cover that I do not see in the DATA Collection page.
what significance do these numbers have? 43/8 tag, bottom. And,16423 top right. Thank You

I believe the 43/8 is the ring and pinion tooth count. 5.38 ratio

Mike has it correct I moved the 43/8 tag from my D41 to my uber fancy D44 30 spline flanged when I got it finished. Afterall it still has 5.38's in it just now they are wrapped around an Eaton E-Locker.

well, that clears things up. actually, I don't know what any of that "stuff" means, sorry.
I'll assume the ring and pinion are a smaller gear turning bigger gear where my drive shaft turns my axle?? Totally stumped regarding the "D41 uber fancy D44 30 spline flanged" lingo! I thought Uber was my ride home after a few beers! Open to an and all education. I will look at my manual in the rear axle section for answers. Thank you again for your help and quick responses.

The 16423 number is a casting number that was used by the manufacturer (Dana) to identify that particular casting. If running changes would be made in a housing because a customer like Willys wanted engineering changes then they would assign a new number.

OK I'll explain my slang. In the world of narrow Jeeps MA to CJ5/6 the strongest rear axle ever used was the 1970 1/2 to 71 Dana 44 with 30 splined axles and flanged ends (where the brake drum attaches) They were only used for like 16 months between Kaiser and AMC's ownership change over. The same axle might be found in a 1/2 ton pickup with a 350+ HP 350ftlb torque engine and BIGGER tires. They are uber rare hard to fine can be expensive when you do find them. The original axle in a CJ-2A would be a Dana 41 with 10 splines and tapered ends a not real strong axle perfectly well suited for our little engines though but in the world of rear axles very much the unwanted unloved No one makes much of anything but bearings and seals for them no new gear sets etc.

Much more clear, now. Thank you Mark. I enjoy the history of Jeep as much as the ownership.
