Ohio Fall Colors Ride – Oct 16th, 2021 (always the third Saturday in October)
A group of Ohio flat fenders are getting together on the Saturday of October 16th, 2021 to drive the unmaintained roads in the area between Tar Hollow State Forest and Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio. This is our fifth year and some of us are making this a spouse outing this year (like last year). We usually have 12 to 15 flat fenders (yes, we would like to keep this as a flat fender event). We will meet around 9:30 and ride for about 5 or 6 hours. The main group will drive the unmaintained county roads. Some roads are just creeks others are old wagon roads that run property lines up into the hills. Something New This Year: We are looking at adding slow paved road group - through the paved forest and paved country roads for people who might have nicer vehicles or just want to stay out of the dirt. Vehicles attending must be licensed and insured because these are state roads. Valid driver’s license for all those who will be driving. Liability resides with the driver on these roads. (I expect we will be doing social distancing to comply with whatever is going on this fall) The plan is to meet at Tar Hollow Lake parking lot below the dam on the left side of Tar Hollow Road at 9:30am. There is also a campground around at location for those interested in camping. Get unloaded and be rolling by 10:00. The Lake parking lot are about 3/4 of a mile up Tar Hollow Road which is off of State Route 327. There is a big sign for Tar Hollow State Park at the entrance. Cell phone service is almost nonexistent. Bring a trail lunch and a tow strap. Hopefully, we will have great weather, but I have found that good Jeeping can be had in all weather if we are prepared and the drivers are up for the challenge. Should be a blast - no cell phones service, New meeting location at the Tar Hollow lake parking lot, unmaintained roads, old Jeeps and fall colors! Take a look at Google maps and let me know if you cant find the meeting place. Here is a link showing the meeting spot. We will be driving the road East / Northeast of the meeting place. Waddles are in. Camping at Tar Hollow. We rode the hard surface last year. If anyone is interested I'll be leading a group again this year.

With baby number 2 due in the later half of September, I’ll probably only be able to get away for the day so no camping shenanigans for me. I know my local crew plans on being there and if baby prep allows me to get another couple of flatties done I’ll be introducing a couple of new guys to Flatfendering.

Out on the roads we use for the Ohio Fall Colors Ride yesterday. They look decent. It has been dry here for a week. Road Reports: Albright Road - The Ford was about hub depth. The hill up was heavily rutted as usual. I did try this with just my new rear locker but I really need the front end pulling to make this hill. I did modify my roll bar padding on a tree. The back side of Albright near the top has some steps that seem to be deeper than in previous years. The church road was good. The creek section was decent the hill climb gate keeper was about the same - we stayed right. At Old Sauder we went right to wards Wolf Cemetery Rd. Old Sauder is still a mess for the first 100 yards. We stayed right and made it though without issue. Riddle Road (TWP HW 13B) was great up to the high tension lines and beyond. We walked down the 1/2 mile side road (now identified as the West end of Lady Run Rd) to the ford on Salt Creek. I always wanted to drive this section and across Salt Creek at the ford. This will take a full day and a ton of winching and probably would be best starting at the bottom. Might be too much for a stock size early CJ2/CJ5. Not something for a Ohio Fall Colors Ride. It was a great day to be in the woods. The Saint ran well and the weather was awesome. Edited by Stev - 23 July 2021 at 11:53am |

Thanks for making all those preparations. I know how you probably just hate to have to take the jeep out to check out the road and trails.
Really looking forward to the OFCR. My brother Ron is planning on it too. He's got his 51 3A running well. My goal is to be running Jeff's gears. They should be arriving today. -Barry

Stev, looking at my maps on Gaia, are your talking about where Lady run drops down over the hill towards Salt fork creek? We ran down it into the creek during our summer jaunts. It wasn’t bad. Going up it would be a massive exercise in winching. Edited by Ruffy - 23 July 2021 at 11:13am |

Yes that is it! I did not know that was part of Lady run. So, Lady Run Rd. starts bad in the East and ends even worse with that hill down to the Ford in the West. So it can be done! There are some deep ruts at the end (like 6 feet deep and very off camber). Edited by Stev - 23 July 2021 at 11:55am |

Just 6 weeks until the Ohio Fall Colors ride.
Trying to get a head count. We are going to have two groups as mentioned earlier. - One that will stay on the hard surface roads and cruse to the local sites - like covered bridges, fire towers, Amish farms and local state park. Waddle is leading this group. - One group that will head to the unmaintained dirt roads for a little on-roading four wheel drive. Dirt roads, creeks, some logging roads like last year. |

I'll be there and depending on the weather forecast, hopefully have my better half along. Also my brother Ron is planning on it with his 51 CJ3A. We will want to do the unmaintained roads.
Can't Wait! -Barry

Barry - Did you get the JPet low gear set installed in your Dana 18 yet? I am still waiting on various parts and tearing down the Dana 20 to make a Dana 18 (long way to go on this project).

Got the case painted over the weekend. Ready to assemble. Planning on having it assembled to take to the Northern Ohio Flatfender Gathering this weekend to show some friends. Then I'll install it in Grasshopper for the Ohio Fall Colors ride. I still am putting up with the T-90 popping out of 2nd - have to hold it in constantly. I won't have time to rebuild it so I'm hoping to pick up a working transmission to pop in when I install the new transfer case.

We’re working on getting James 3b, my 2a and DJ3A operational for this trip. We’re current waiting on back ordered parts. If anyone has spare spicer D25/27 long side axle shafts they’re willing to part with let me know.
So with the early arrival of my second son this week I’ve had some down time to work on this years sticker. If you want one… got to show up Saturday morning |

Hey Jordan! Congrats on your new arrival! Great job on the sticker. The flatfender gathering is in Canton on Sunday. I'll keep an eye out for axle shafts.

I had planned on going to the Gathering to parts hound but we’ll just be getting situated at home this weekend if we get discharged tomorrow.
