The cheap parts of concern are a omix shaft that was made in two parts and welded together.   AN obvious move to save $. All single piece forged shafts are fine. There should be zero slop when installed. THE little tits are a wear item too. THESE can have a 10% wear and be just fine. Adjust by the book. Many guys over tighten the adjuster and Tha causes wear. FILL with 140w gear oil. If it leaks out you shafts or bushings are shot and allow too much play for the seal to handle. Be aware some crown shafts are too fat in the splines and do not fit into the arm enough.

I have been working with Ron Fitzpatrick who has Crown looking into the spline issue. He is sending Crown a NOS shaft and arm so they can check factory vs their new ones. No word yet. Stand by.

Just in case anyone has not seen this yet.

Omix has issued a recall notice on this part.

Thanks Russ. It's a good thing to see happen. Glad no one has been hurt due to this part yet. John

I have been working with Ron Fitzpatrick jeep parts on this issue.  He sells Crown shafts.  They are well made BUT there is another issue that I found when fixing my jeeps.  The splined end of the sector shaft is a bit too fat so the arm only fits on about half way.  That leaves half of the arm hanging over the threads.  Ron is found a US company that is going to make these parts in high quality.  It will be about 9 months before they are ready.

You are correct, I removed the left front fender, (easy enough) removed the 4 bolts in the steering box, removed the large nut on the steering
arm, and out comes the shaft.

I used a ball joint separator. Tap gently between the steering box and the arm and off it came.

I've often wondered about the quality of Crown parts. I've been told they are very good but, some of them look just like the Omix stuff. So, who makes Crown parts and where?

The crown stuff is usually just fine. Most made in the US. Just a dimension issue on the sector shafts.

Any update about the fat spline issue? Now that I remember, mine is like that. It's a one piece sector, but the splines only allow for maybe 2/3rd engagement.

From what I have found out, the Crown brand is too fat in the spline section on the shaft.  The arm is ok.  So a new arm will work on an original shaft.  Crown is slow in responding.  Ron Fitzpatrick jeep parts has a new American made set in the works but it will take 9 months before they will be ready.
I just used a used but great shape Ford shaft with a Crown arm.  The fit was fine and full depth.  I tried but decided not to use a Omix arm on the Ford shaft but the arm went on too far and the washer and nut could not tighten down on it.

Could someone post the actual size difference between the original and the Crown selector shaft? It would help all those that are planning to rebuild one.

I should be receiving a new set from Walck's in a few days. I have no idea what brand they will be but will see how they fit and what I end up with.

Are the Crown shafts hardened?  Were the originals hardened?
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable

From what I have seen in my shop is that they all are case hardened.  The issue with Crown is the splines are too fat.  The Omix has a design flaw of using two pieces instead of one.
All other aspects seem to be ok for these brands.

My 2 cents is that the original Ross sector was forged in one piece, with a hardened insert where the lash screw contacts. The recalled part was a 2 piece where a rolled bar was necked down and welded to a casting.

The other sector from another manufacturer reverse engineered their part, and ended up with an MB/cj shaft with Truck or later larger Jeep application taper design.
