We solved the driveshaft issue. I posted elsewhere that the driveshaft was too short to mate up to the 44. Well after some thought and contemplation I saw what the true issue was.
The core issue was the early style flange yoke does not allow enough driveshaft angle to meet a lifted rear. The previous owner of the axle had cut the perches off and increased the pinion angle to account for this. It was a clean fix and worked very well - no vibes. The new 44, the pinion angle was stock. so the drivershaft would not droop enough to make the connection. So I swapped the flange yoke for the later style. Everything bolted up fine. I still think the driveshaft is a bit on the short side. I would like to see it maybe 3/4 of to an inch longer. But it will function just fine as is. Maybe down the road I'll have one made that is a bit longer. Early versus late style. Flange surface to u-joint center measures 1.375 versus 1.6. That small difference was all I needed. Who would have known. I picked up on this via the article in the Dispatcher on T-cases. Then I did some research on the specs. So thank you to the Dispatcher team for pointing me in the right direction! U-joint angle. Both pinion degree and t-case degree match. So it should (in theory) be vibration free. If not, we'll make some adjustment. |

We are finally done. After some parts drama - finding correct hub seals - we got her all put together. I ran the axle up on stands at 30MPH with no issues. Run out at the hubs is negligible. Mrs Nofender was kind enough to man the pedals so I could bleed the brakes.
Overall - very happy! Things went together very well with few issues. At a later time if i wish to swap to locking hubs, it will be very simple. This was a fun project/upgrade! |

Thanks guys! The bumps came from a full size Chevy application. Daystar and others still make them. They have a single stud to mount. So I had to weld some stops onto the frame to keep them from spinning. Edited by nofender - 18 Mar. 2019 at 1:54pm |

Switched gears a bit and went back to the trailer. The front panel needed to be redone. The gun was gunked up an I laid WAY too much paint causing a run that stretched across the panel. I just tucked it away and waited for a better day. That day was Saturday. I sanded and prepped and reshot it. Instead of a whole panel of runs, I just have one nice one in the middle of the panel. I'm so proud. LOL. It's staying. It's a trailer for goodness sake.
Once that was done, I mounted up the e-brake lever. It actually all works. Lest piece is the tailgate chains. Using lengthen 2A chains. Just waiting on the custom length covers from Beachwood. Call it Reunion prep.....wrapping up small details. All that's left after this is to clean it up and put the airbags under the new truck. Being a half ton driver now, I want a little more insurance for carrying the weight. |

In today's episode of solutions to problems no one has........we tackle weight distribution!
So for the last 15 years I owned a one ton Diesel Ram to haul my junk around. Actually it was a 3/4 ton quite modified to do one ton plus things. The abuse and weight I threw at that thing are a felony in12 states. Anyway fast forward. Around Christmas, I made the tough choice to sell the old gal and the JK. I'm traveling more and more and needed some comfort for those long days. So, I picked up a 2019 Ram 1500 with all sorts of fancy gizmos in it. It's easily the most complex vehicle I have ever owned. I love it. But it really is more of an SUV than a pick up. Coil spring rear is wonderful.....until you put some weight on it. Hauling a Jeep - no problem. The thing is spec'd to pull 11,000 lbs plus. It's no Diesel. But it's pretty bad ass in the power department. But boy you need to get the weight in just the right spot. I have a couple events I want to go to this year, one being the reunion. I've toyed with every configuration to get the Jeep and the trailer up onto my 18 foot deck trailer. They will fit fine. But the tongue weight is crazy. Also the rear overhangs a bit more than I would like. See pic.... You can see the weight bars hooked up. It wasn't bad. But, when i crawled under the truck i saw the bumps were an inch away from bottoming. And I wasn't all too comfortable with the bulge in the not 10 ply anymore street tires this truck has. So I built this. Picture the trailer tongue forward up to the front of the trailer. The landing foot drops into the box. We cinch down the lunette and secure the axle. Now the Jeep can be driven behind the trailer and also cinched down. This lands the Jeeps weight perfectly centered over the trailers dual axles! WIN!! Yes it will take some maneuvering at the final destination. But I think this will be much safer set up for the long hauls with both pieces. We'll test fit it all in the AM. I'm pretty confident this will balance out great. A little tension on the bars and we'll be good! Edited by nofender - 14 Apr. 2019 at 11:48am |

Sounds like you’re in the same boat as me. Right after Christmas we sold my wife’s JK and my 2000 dodge Cummins and bought a 19 ram 1500 classic, the old body style one. We needed a truck the whole family could ride in, and really like it so far. I haven’t pulled a lot of weight yet, as I still haven’t gotten the trailer brake controller hooked up. The little I’ve pulled it has done great, but the weight does push it around more than the old truck. I’ve thought about air bags to stiffen it up, but I’ll do some driving and testing with a load first. Good solution with the trailer mount, weight distribution makes all the difference between a comfortable tow and a wreck.

Yep! I'm not worry about the truck being capable of pulling the load. I just don't want to be riding around on the bump stops. I do have an AirLift system headed my way. I think it's almost a must with these new Rams.

If that doesn't work, can you try backing the jeep on the trailer and placing the trailer tongue under the front end of the jeep. May have to build a receiver on the front bumper of the jeep for loading and unloading

You've never seen his backing abilities, have you ? You should tell him to push the trailer on backwards by hand.

that's always been my plan.... Drove TT for years. I can put a 48 footer in the driveway. But this short little trailer, i can't go backwards 8 feet without screwing it up.

Hi nofender, your Jeep, trailer combo could be the inspiration for a hot-wheels or die-cast model.... The wheel tire package is awesome! Beautiful!!
