What you are seeing is two solid coats. I gave it a 20 minute flash between coats.

I’m using a single stage urethane from TPC Global. I noticed right away the paint seemed thin compared to the Pasture Green I got from them prior.

To your point, I wasn’t terribly concerned with the few areas I sanded past the primer. There was paint below it. I did not think it would be an issue. I thought this would cover better.

I would vote for redoing it, if you did just live with it I highly doubt anyone else would notice it but I think it will bother you forever.
I have places like that on my MB where no one else has ever noticed but I do every time. So it all comes down to what you want in the end.
Either way I think it looks great and thank you for sharing it with us.

Yes, I'm also curious why it didn't cover very well. You stated two solid coats were applied; were these double coats?

Just to compare- my first complete enamel paint job was bright yellow and the car had brown and gray primer spots on various panels. The paint covered these two very different colors fine without a sealer and I went around the car 3x spraying double coats.

Thanks for the tips.

So if I were to redo it, what should I do? DA the whole thing lightly and the shoot primer over the offending spots? Then reshoot?

Or is there more I should be doing? Any advice is appreciated.

I just went out and looked at it. The finish is very nice! The color toned down slightly as it cured. I really do like the color. The rear panel and cowl are near perfect.

Yellow pigments are very poor at covering. The best way to get yellow to cover is to find a white primer or paint it white first. This was a trick I used back when I was a painter in a body shop.

Yep. Learned that the hard way. I’m going to scuff it and re-prime the spots. Then reshoot it. Lesson learned.

Like you said. Yellow looks great. I would sand those spots down. Re-prime and then reshoot it again.

Well......wish me luck.....redo time.....

I hit the whole tub with 220 and laid down a uniform layer of epoxy primer. Letting it set now.

My debate is whether to wait overnight or shoot color after dinner. I think I'm safe either way. We'll see what the night brings.....

Not sure of what products you're using, but if it was me I would wet sand the whole thing w/ 400 wet and then let it dry overnight after cleaning it up really good. Then thin down your epoxy primer and use it as a sealer, let the primer flash and tack up, then spray the finish coat. If you topcoat within the timeframe for the primer (see the instructions) you maximize the chemical adhesion between primer and paint.

Well it’s done. Thanks for the tips. Otto I did as you said and thinned down the primer a tad. Things laid down well. Coverage is good. Little more orange peel than I would like. But we can color sand at some point. I believe I laid down enough top coat.

I just turned up the heat and shop down the shop. We’ll see how she looks in the AM. Under some bright halogens....I’m cautiously optimistic.

My guess is that the two top coats you applied the first time will act as a sealer, and you could have just sanded with 400 grit and shot over that and it would have covered, but taking it a step further as you did should get you to the same place. I'm sure it will be perfect. It certainly is going to stand out in a crowd.

First - Happy Mother's Day to all the great moms out there!

Second - thanks everyone for the tips. Compared to painting the Pasture Green on the 2A, this was a completely different animal.

That said, with some research and the tips from here - this is what we ended up with! Is it perfect? No. But I label it as pretty dang good! I'm really looking forward to touching up the wheel wells and getting it dropped onto the tub!
