Well this one is fighting me too! 

I fired the motor, after being silent for the last 20 months. It was not good. Tons of noise, zero oil pressure. Now keep in mind, I tested this motor and confirmed it good when I started the project. We shut her down quick and did some investigating. Seems the oiling system lost it's prime. So I packed the oil pump and then primed it until I saw good oil flow up top. All's well that ends well. Motor is fine now. 

After it was running, it sprung a big leak at the fuel pump. After more investigating, I found an incompatible fitting at the pump. So we redid that. Fixed. 

Okay next. Started seeing some coolant seepage. It soon became a torrent. After chasing the obvious external things, I determined the water pump is spend. It's new. I'm guessing it dried up from sitting. So I'll be replacing that in the AM.

Brakes......Oh the brakes. Could not get any fluid to move. Ended up removing the MC and bench bleeding it again. After some work, I got fluid moving again. Brakes just need a little burp at this point. But they appear to be functioning. 

So we are about to drive. Just pull it out of the shop into the sun. Maybe go up and down the driveway a few time. Not meant to be. I could not get enough adjustment out of the chain system. So I disassembled what I had to see what I could see. Well that little ball at the end of the cable - yeah that one. The one on this Jeep is essentially a half moon shape. So when you are adjusting it, that shape get hung up on the shift fork and you can't adjust the clutch. Foiled again. Two part fix. New cable with the proper ball at the end. Then I will modify the linkage bar with a longer tab to get more throw. I recall doing the same mod to another v6 jeep I had. 

My goal was to at least test it a bit on the road. But that's not gonna happen. The GOOD news is that it's off the skates and on the ground finally! Most other systems tested well! 

 So close.....be yet so far....

I feel your pain!  Some days it's 1 step forward and 2 steps back, but these are all tiny little glitches in the big picture.  Your doing an awesome job and your almost there!

Made progress today. Did a lot of little things. Addressed a few wiring glitches. Mrs Nofender volunteered some time to assist with the final brake bleed. 

I got the clutch linkage straightened out. Now I'm waiting on a water pump so I can fix that leak.

Nice work Andy!

Even with the other vehicles in there I can't believe how much room you have to walk around the vehicles.

I have to side shuffle in my 24x24 shop but it does have a rolling chassis, the 48 2A and two tubs on their sides amongst my other treasures... What are your dimensions?

Since I sold off the wagons, it's been heaven. I miss the old gals. But I love the space.

The rags soaked with diesel are standing by......

Finally test drive day! It actually went pretty well. Did about a 10 mile loop after wrapping up the water pump job. 

Not enough free play in the brake pedal. Brakes were hanging up. So we fixed that. Check. 

One small leak in a brake line. Fixed that. Check.

Spooled on the new winch cable onto the 8274. Man I love this winch. 

Wrapped up building my tool box rack. Check. 

Wouldn't idle for s***. So we adjusted and fiddled until we got her right. Check. 

So, pulling into the driveway (Mrs nofender filming my return) - as I ease into the garage, BANG. POP. Rattle! Rattle! Clutch pedal goes to the floor. Clutch no longer doing clutch stuff. I fiddled with it a bit tryin to diagnose. But we all know you can't see much. So I'm assuming the worst. Clutch or throw out or both decided to check out. 

So the transmission needs to come out......yep. 

This is a family board. So just take a second and think of your favorite curse word. Add that to your second favorite curse word. Then let out that word that gets you banned from your church. Put them all together with a few colorful adjectives. Repeat it in varying order at least three times while you spin in a circle. Now you get about what I am trying to say but won't type here! LOL

Damn thing.

So the TWO things I didn’t check, because I was assured they were new - the water pump and the clutch. Thought about it while it was all apart and now I’m kicking myself. I believe the clutch is new. But it was not installed correctly. I also think the fork bound up on the retainer and broke said retainer. I’ve had it happen in the past. It really should only take 2 hours or so to drop it out and investigate. 

Ultimately my own fault for not doing my due diligence. Considering the copious amounts of booty fab on this Jeep, I should have known better!!

Well here is how I ended my day yesterday. And it fought me every step of the way. I actually had to cut part of the floor away to get this out. I suppose that is a good thing. Now future service is doable. 



And the clutch was indeed new......perhaps in Roman times. 

The flywheel looks to be some sort of billet piece. Interesting. The clutch cover is painted purple. That gives me the theory that this is some sort of Zoom race set up. So I'm guessing what we have here is a repurposed set up from a street car. 

I's much rather have a heavy flywheel (I'm guessing this is in the 25 lb range) but I don't have the time or desire to source and rebalance one right now. 

The throwout bearing is the wrong one. The clutch fork appears to be correct, but severely deformed. The opening for the throwout bearing is at least 1/4 inch too wide. The pilot bushing fell out in my hand. And absolutely nothing was greased. 

Nobody's fault but mine. Given the boogery of this whole Jeep, I should have checked this while it was apart. 

All the new bits are here. I just need to get the flywheel dressed and it can go back together. Fingers crossed it can be saved. 

Positive note - I can now fix the countershaft cover leak. See! Always a silver lining. LOL

The final big battles have been won! 

Clutch and trans install went well. Took some head scratching to get this 250 lb in by myself. A combination of the engine crane and two floor jacks got it in there without me losing a finger or breaking my back. 

The clutch break in ride was a few miles to the gas station and back. Damn thing wouldn't stay running. When I got to the shop, it was leaking fuel. What now? After finding the source, I pulled the carb. Bench clean and rebuild set it right. 

Second ride - she actually stayed running and went down the road pretty well! 

Today's list is to get cracking on the trans tunnel cover. Final timing and carb tune. I should be ready for this year's Mason Dixon! 

Finally out in the sun! 



And a little shot of the tool box rack I whipped up the other day. Now I can simply move the road tools from one jeep to the other. No need for two sets of tools.

And that as they say is that! I'm declaring this build complete. Yes there will be some minor tweaks and improvements here and there. But overall - its a done deal!! 

We did make it to the Mason-Dixon Gathering. We had a great weekend! Some good friends visited and we all enjoyed messing around with old Jeeps. We put close to 200 miles on our Jeeps that weekend. We toured some cool back roads in PA and MD on both days. Saturday was rainy and sometimes a bit rough. But we were rewarded with a beautiful Sunday to enjoy. Many thanks to the organizers of this event! 

So next on the list is the VEC I picked up earlier this year (my stock build) or the 1947 Bantam. Should I start a new thread? Or just keep this going here? What do you think?
