I bet very few of us could claim to be within 1/16.
I'd bet it flexes more than that. Nice job!

Well you knew it would happen......a deviation from stock.....
In preparation for the Ramsey winch, I did box the front frame rails. Not knowing exactly how i will mount the winch - I simply added two attachments per side on the level of the chassis. I'm designing the cradle in my head as I look at various diagrams and pictures of Jeeps with this winch. For the record I think boxing is almost a needed update on these frames. Anyway - next I have to address the non-stock angle cut on the end of these replacement rails. The way these are built, you can't attach the L-bracket from the frame to the bumper. And the main reason to correct the frame ends is so I can mount the ID tag in the correct spot. Removing this tag without damage took way longer than I care to admit. But the tag is the pedigree of this thing! And just a poser shot after time spent with a needle scaler and a spray can. I'm happy with where we are at today. |

That angled end on the frame horn, with that round hole, is am MB feature. The bumper-to-frame attachment needed to be much stronger for the CJ2-A.

I will be watching to see how you remedy the angled ends of the frame horns. Mine will need the same treatment, although mine might be easier since they aren't welded onto the frame yet.

I've got a plan for this. I don't have the proper rivet tool for the attachment of the L-bracket. So I will have to think through that. In the meantime, I tore down the front axle. Very pleased with it's condition. More pics to come.

Needed some garage therapy time this week. So I tackled the front axle. Been collecting parts for months now.
The teardown was very interesting. I'm relatively sure other than bearing service, this axle has never been touched. Every bolt matched. Every lock and star washer was in place. The Bendix and ratio tags were still attached. The gear lube.....well it just had that "old" smell. The cover had never been off. Axle shafts are correct. The spindles cleaned up beautifully. I'm amazed how nice this axle is. I took what seemed like days to clean all the bolts, washers and associated parts. I only had to replace the 8 studs and nuts on the knuckle tops. Everything went back together with the OG hardware. With a mountain of new grade 8 hardware at my disposal, you have no idea how hard this was for me! I did replace the clapped out springs with new USA Walck's units. Full disclosure. I need to find some stock clamps for the bake line on the axle tube. I could not save those. Anyway - here's where we sit today. now if only I could find C-shackle bushings somewhere on this planet, I'd be happy! |

We were back at it yesterday. I was able to wrap up the front suspension/steering/brake rehab. I added the Kelly locking hubs while I was at it. Every steering item, except the box itself is new or refurbished. I think we are in good shape now!!
Yesterday's primary focus was out back however. The rear drawbar/bumper situation was odd. At first i thought to keep it, as it was pretty unique and I half liked the look of it. But after a closer look, it had to go. At some point someone was attempting to torch the drawbar off. Then they stopped and welded portions of the drawbar to the rear crossmember. I carefully cut the welds and removed the whole mess. The rear crossmember suffered the dreaded chain wrap pull. I couldn't get it as straight as I would have liked. But I decided to leave the original piece on, rather than replace it. Once I got that straight-ish, I mounted a proper drawbar in a proper way. I couldn't salvage any hardware, so there are some new grade 8's on there. Today's project - remove rear axle and suspension completely and start the refresh. Some before and after shots for you. |

I vote "yes" on the bumper delete option ... we're gonna have to chat about that tailpipe, though

Looking great Andy!
I kept bending my tailpipe closed every time I'd drop off a ledge. I finally gave up and heated it up and bent it so it sticks straight out. I'm sure those behind me appreciate it not pointed downward blowing up extra clouds of dust! -Barry

Just a heads up...
Your brake shoes are installed backwards. This style brake design requires the large surface shoe to be installed in the front location.

At hawk is correct the Willys has Lockheed style brakes and with those the larger shoe goes to the front. The more common Bendix brakes have the small shoe to the front.

You know.....I spent quite a bit of time researching this and couldn't seem to find a definitive answer. Thank you for this! I wasn't 100% sure it was right the way I set them up. I'll go back and swap them around. Thanks again.

Update time.....
The rear suspension/axle refresh is complete. New seals all around. New brake shoes (this time installed correctly) and new wheel cylinders. The pile of parts I've accumulated over the last 18 months is starting to dwindle. The Walck's springs give a bit more height than I would have like. But I'm assuming they will settle some. The front shocks are just barely long enough. So we will see. I'm more and more amazed at how original this Jeep is. Again - all bolts are matching. Lock and or star washers are in place. All the bolts have matching markings. It's pretty cool. Cleaning up all this original hardware might seem tedious - but it's very satisfying! stance. Jumping around a bit, I dove into the T-case. It's been spewing oil for a long time. The e-brake is soaked. Anyway - i cracked open the case - and it's beautiful inside. I'm more and more convinced the miles displayed is real. While I'm here, I'll bolt up the PTO. You can see the pasture green under the PTO plate. Edited by nofender - 14 Nov. 2022 at 5:44am |
