In today's episode of "too much time on too small a thing" I present the alternator mount.

I had some options to mount the alternator. But none of them fit. Mostly because I'm a kook. So the 12 SI, i decided was too big. So I switched to the 10 SI. Nothing fancy - just a 63 amp AC Delco.

So the mount. I needed to space it out enough to make room for a York compressor. But seeing as i can't yet find a viable York, I had to venture a guess on the spacing. I cut a 3/16 plate to give me as many mounting possibilities for a York. So you can see the spacing and the blank space to create a compressor mount. I had to stretch the adjustment arm roughly 3 inches. Likely this will be temporary as it won't clear a compressor I'm sure. The good news is, I can run as is, without a compressor without issue. When I find a suitable York, I can create the mount with this base.

As a side note, I got my recycled wiring harness installed and laid out. Still playing with the layout. But you get the idea.

So now.....power steering pump bracket.

As you might expect from this Jeep, the pump mount/bracket was.....well.....crap. So I needed to come up with something better.

Here's what we had before. There were remnants of probably a Buick pump mount that was attached to the pump. That contraption was attached to the engine with this gem

Yep. pretty bad.

I turned to my old stand by mount - a SBC low mount. Simple design that's pretty easy to adapt to odd ball engines. I used this mount on the flathead as well. Oh....and used one on an actual Chevy engine that resides in the crawler.

Some bits of 3/16 flat plate. Some craps of rectangle tubing and you got yourself a PS mount.

And finally all painted pretty and mounted up. Now all we are waiting for is the York. Should be here anytime now. Then we can be done with the accessory drives.

Thanks for all the positive comments. Keeping me motivated on this one! It's become a challenge!!

Currently sidetracked a bit.

Had a little mishap with the crawler. We did a backwards roll into an end over end side flop. It was pretty ugly. Thankfully no one was hurt! The damage looks worse than it really is. It's mostly sheet metal damage. There are some dented tubes. But overall, not bad. I'm glad I've spent some time over the years installing solid safety gear. I'll likely replace my belts just in case they suffered some damage.

This is how she looked coming home.

All the bent metal removed....

And finally all but the hood straightened out. Had to do a minor repair to the radiator before the grill went on. New lights arrive on Tuesday.

I was going to attempt to fix the hood. But it's just too mangled. It was folded in half. I got it unfolded for the ride home. But sadly it's pretty whooped. It'll be wall art now....

Ha! No! it's been years since I did anything more than an easy flop. This one took me by surprise. In the end it was simply driver error and I learned a lot that day! An yes.....very glad I spent many hours making a safe driver and passenger compartment.

So now back to the CJ5.

I've been thinking about the York compressor and how I would mount it for a few weeks now. I had a few ideas that I thought might work. It's amazing how quickly you run out of real estate for belts, hose, etc. Getting all those things to clear was more challenging than I expected.

So here's the mount getting roughed in.

The above was the pivot. It's offset so I can get a good swing for proper belt tension. From there I trimmed those brackets and created a cradle for the York to sit in.

And then finally we got all the adjustment arms to like each other. Each system has it's own belt. All the belts clear. The compressor is a little higher than I would like. But i mounted the hood and grill to check for clearance and we are good.

And thus ends the saga of the accessory drives.....well of course except for a bit of finish welding and paint.

Yep!

In my 3B, I had to mount my York about where your alternator is so it could extend rearward of the sbc head mounting surface.  There wasn't enough real estate to get the belts aligned otherwise.

This is what it looks like:

That set up looks great.

In hindsight I probably should have swapped position of the alternator and the York like you did. I don’t like that the York is so high. But it will function just fine and I need to get over it.LOL

Your engine bay cage is pretty neat. I've always wondered how well they would hold up in a rollover.
