Using the back seats as a "reference", I use that term lightly with screen/web colors.

The seats look more olive/green than a faded gray. But it is really a shot in the dark using images from different cameras etc.

I agree with Low that the shot of the drivers seat looks grey.  Darker grey then what I am thinking and seeing in the video, but it does look grey.  The shot of the two seats with the sun light on them they appear more OD or a faded version of it anyway.  Sam, cant you get the owner of these seats to cut them open and look underneath at an area that is untouched by sunlight?!?LOL

Sorry guys. Only OD to start, No grey.

Barcelona red was added at the same time that Michigan Yellow, Harvard Red, and Princeton Black paint was added. #'s 666577, 666578, 666579.

Slate Grey was added much later, and was only used on paint options #4 and #9 (whatever than means)

Apparently 691193 was issued when CJ5 was introduced and was the "master" fabric chart for all models, so that gives me something to find between now and the next Mason Meet.

Yeah, but that was some guy named Mike in Ohio.

Everybody knows those guys in Ohio don't know anything about Jeeps and stuff.

BTW, the first entry for grey was 668047, 50" wide, 28 oz/yd.

The 2nd application of grey was 671562, 54 " wide, and 32 oz per yard (per 691193)

Ok... now to add another question for the experts and even guys from Ohio named Mike.

The full seat pics from Russ show a vinyl covered cloth with the weave of the cloth showing through. What All4Jeepn shows is more of a grained texture..

Do we still think the grained vinyl is a stock seat covering as well ?

They should both be colonial grain. It does get polished with use.

So does that mean that the first picture of the early style rear seat that Russ posted a few post back has been recovered or is it OD that has faded so badly to appear grey?
Inquiring minds want to know.

He won't be doing it just for  you! Wink I think that there are several of us that want to nail down the correct covering for whatever Jeep we have.

Another thought is that, I'm thinking that OD vinyl makes a lot of sense for the early 2As that were available in only  tan and green body colors.  That gray has never felt right for the tan, in particular. It just is not a complimentary color for tan.   The OD works better for both tan and green.  On the other hand, when I recover mine, I want it to be as close to correct as I can accomplish even if the I don't think much of the color combination.  So, I'm interested in learning whatever I can that seems authoritative.

Here's one sample that purports to be that.  The pattern on the vinyl does look similar to what we have found on original seat coverings although I have not held this up the sample that I have.   EDIT: Now, looking at other pictures here of apparent original covers, I think the grain in the new sample, below, is finer than that of the originals.  Of course, I cannot be sure of the scale of the new sample. Confused  I will post more pictures of originals, focusing on the grain.

As an revisit, computer/monitor output will vary amongst us all......

here is an NOS front seat back, with original springs/horsehair/burlap/covering from 45/early 46....

just like in Sam's photo of the green jeep, color can be deceiving, but this cover IS OD.....

Ok Sam,
I think you are gonna like this.  I forgot I had the original fabric to my early rear seat tucked away so I went and got it.  When I pulled it out, I thought, this is grey for sure.  So I pulled it out and took some pictures under the light with a white background and some ColorAid samples of grey beside it.

But wait! It gets better!
I then looked underneath on the back side of the fold.  A side that should see very little sunlight but still subjected to UV and weather.  Here is what I found.  I put it on the same white background ( though my camera did not make it as bright as the first) and laid some ColorAid sample greens beside it.  You can see the fold and a clearly defined color change.
Does this mean that this seat was originally green or OD and faded so badly to grey?
I am inclined to believe this could happen over 60 years, but I still feel that the seats in the later part of the video I posted look plenty grey to me and they haven't had the 60 years of fading going on.  I do not believe that this ODish color was formed by being rubbed up against the seat frame for all these years.

low, I think you can tell that I am wanting to find that OD is correct, but those look more gray to me than OD.  Do you have any gray samples that you can photograph along side the covers that are OD or, at least, a medium gray item of any kind?

I know we're not likely to get agreement on colors on the Web, but it's still worth a try.  Maybe we can go back to the idea of color reference cards that I think Jack Durre brought up when he was still among us.

EDIT: Dave, seeing your post that was done in parallel with mine reinforces the idea that we need to have some color reference cards that we all have identical sets of to photograph along side our samples.  Also, can you get a straight-on, close up shot of the original grain.
