I live in Wisconsin and our collector plates are blue with red lettering which... in my opinion... does not look good on an OD jeep. I think I've found plate mounting locations that I'm... "OK" with, but I just hate the stark contrasting color of these plates. I have a CNC plasma cutting table and vinyl cutter, so my thoughts are to make an exact size and shape plate from 16ga steel, paint that "plate" ODG to match my GPW, then cut out the correct, exact shape and size letters from my legal plates, in black vinyl... including the words "COLLECTOR" and "WISCONSIN". Basically to make an exact copy of my state plates, but in ODG with white or possibly black letters. I could use gloss or matte letters even. (The matte colors show less glare)

I would "think" that if a cop did see me driving around, he probably wouldn't even notice that the plates aren't flat and are homemade. He'd still be able to easily read them and call them in if he needed to. I'd also keep the state plates in the vehicle at all times just in case a cop wanted me to change them. I don't want to paint my collector plates just in case, but I could easily create some that would look perfect, just a different color.

My state DMV says:
-A person who registers a Collector motor vehicle that was manufactured before 1979 may display a historical plate from or representing the model year of the vehicle when driving to or from a car show, or during a parade, if the registration and plates issued by WisDOT are carried in or with the vehicle and are available for inspection by law enforcement upon request.

Reading that, I know that my state is OK with me driving around with plates (at least to car shows and parades...) that aren't registered to my vehicle and could be any number of colors so I "think" it'd be fine...

What do you all think?

Here's what I got:

Could be expensive.
What did your DMV say about these Wisconsin laws?
(The underlines are mine)
I do like the plate holder bracket....

341.61  Improper use of evidence of registration. Any person who does any of the following may be required to forfeit not more than $500:

(1) Lends to another a registration plate, insert tag, decal or other evidence of registration for display upon a vehicle for which the plate, tag, decal or other evidence of registration has not been issued.

(2) Displays upon a vehicle a registration plate, insert tag, decal or other evidence of registration not issued for such vehicle or not otherwise authorized by law to be used thereon.

(3) Willfully twists, paints, alters or adds to or cuts off any portion of a registration plate, insert tag, decal or other evidence of registration; or who places or deposits, or causes to be placed or deposited on such plate, insert tag, decal or other evidence of registration any substance to hinder the normal reading of such plate, insert tag, decal or other evidence of registration; or who defaces, disfigures, covers, obstructs, changes or attempts to change any letter or figure thereon; or who causes such plate, insert tag, decal or other evidence of registration to appear to be a different color.

(4) Possesses a fraudulently or unlawfully obtained registration plate, insert tag, decal or other evidence of registration.

(5) Possesses a counterfeit registration plate, insert tag, decal or other evidence of registration.

341.615  Reproducing evidence of registration prohibited. Except as authorized by the department, any person who reproduces, by any means whatever, a registration plate, insert tag, decal or other evidence of registration shall forfeit not less than $200 nor more than $500.

341.62  False evidence of registration. Whoever operates or possesses a motor vehicle, recreational vehicle, trailer or semitrailer having attached thereto any plate or similar device fashioned in imitation or facsimile of or altered so as to resemble a registration plate issued by the department may be required to forfeit not more than $500.

The state of Wisconsin offers an MV Collector plate, probably be safer to check into that

It looks good, but let's not discuss if it's the correct shade of OD, ok?

I think the blue and red plates look good next to the OD.

Won't they let you use year of manufacture plates?
I'm running actual 1947 Oregon plates on my '47 CJ2A, perfectly legal as long as you register them as an antique -- in theory to be used for car events only, but who is to say if you are not headed to a car show?  I have never been hassled.  I looked at the old original Wisconsin plates & they are kinda cool looking - Black w/white lettering.. & it says "America's Dairyland" on the bottom.

Yeah those would work, if I had some. I guess I could find some on eBay and probably will for my 2A’s, but I think I’ll go with the HMV plates for the GPW!

Why not "age" the state plates?

You could very well change the feel of them to something that is very fitting, but, still legal.

Not a bad idea… but I think I’ll go with the military plates for this one.

Yup. I heard that "fake patina" is all the rage in some vintage car circles.

Excuse me ---- "faux patina".

Both my jeeps have vintage year-matching license plates. Low plate numbers are highly coveted with the hot rod crowd.
