I have both cases cleaned. But having never done this I'm unsure about when to prime and when to paint.

I want all the bolts painted, so my gut tells me I should put them all the way back together, tape off areas not to be painted, and prime and paint as the final step.

But I've also seen people prime before reassembly. Any thoughts or gotchas?

Thanks

I just did this recently. I assembled both the trans and transfer case and painted them separately and then bolted them together and did a final few coats on the unit as a whole. As for painting the bolts, some I installed and then painted and others I stuck in cardboard and painted and then installed

I would paint the cases, not the bolts, assemble the unit, torque to spes, and then a final coat of paint to cover the bolts.

If you Paint the bolts ahead of time, they will just get the paint messed up by the wrench.

What is the original color of trans/tc?  Semi-gloss black I assume?

On my two CJ2As (47 & 48) the color was grey.
