Today was the day for painting the tub, inside and underneath. I had to forgo glasses while doing this as the paint was blasting back at me as fast as it was coming out of the gun- especially when spraying under the cowl and the toolbox. So I was spraying blind a lot of the time, but focused on the areas that were of importance to me- like stuff you will see!  It’s important to me that the tub has shiny paint on the difficult to reach areas around brackets and gussets; there’s really no way to polish these spots later- and I detest polishing paint.

The bottom just got one coat with just enough paint to color it; it really didn’t receive much prep as it will soon be covered with grease, oil and dirt.

The other day, I was just about to ask about an update and you posted you were getting the paint. I have been looking forward to seeing the body sprayed out. I wish I could see the paint in person, especially in the sun. Are you happy with the color so far?

Was it you, in a separate thread, that I mentioned using a tinted bedliner on the underside?

Looks great. I hope the rest sprays out well.

I guess I'm happy with the color, it was a close match to the original paint and that was the goal. If you want to see it in person, come on out and take a look! I thought my shop was well lit but these last photos look a bit dark.

I did consider using some bedliner type product on the inside of the front fenders, but haven't settled on anything yet- still thinking on that one.

There's plenty of paint now, I may have purchased a bit more than needed but that's better than being short. A couple of pieces that were painted early on may get resprayed as I'm not super happy with them.

There were some questions on what a paint job costs, so I gathered up most of the receipts for the paint related expenses in 2022 for the jeep project and it’s a bit of an eye opener. The material bill totals right at $1800! This is just for products used so far to get the jeep’s body ready for paint plus the materials for refinishing. So we’re talking about sandpaper, primers & sealers and their respective activators & reducers. I didn’t add in the cost of the new spray gun as that’s a tool even though it helped out on this project. Some of the products didn’t get used up completely on the jeep, so they can be used on other future painting efforts, but I tried to keep the inventory down and buy just what was needed and I’m pretty frugal.

Some materials were purchased last year that were not part of this tally, and they would have been fillers, sandpapers and likely some epoxy primer & activator. So, probably not a huge cash outlay but still contributions to the bill. Let’s call last year’s expenditures at least $200, so the total materials bill is around $2K to rehab an old jeep. Now about my labor…

It’s done!

I tried the 1.4mm setup in the spray gun so it would put out a bit more paint; I think I want to try a conventional air cap on the gun and see how it works compared to the HVLP cap that it came with. In all I’m happy with it, it could be a bit better, but outside of a paint booth there’s only so much one can do garage painting.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, I'm glad it's done.

It may have been quicker to have sprayed the tub complete on the rotisserie rather than split it up like I did. I think all areas could have been reached plus it would have saved time and masking materials- next time I’ll give that a go.

Thank you. You aren't kidding about the floor; even though it was wet down the paint still stuck but good. It has adhered so well to the floor, the fans, me and my paint suit and everything else that I have high confidence in it sticking to the jeep!

Thanks. Both of my jeeps still had areas of original paint in good condition and when cleaned up, was flat and shiny. I think these jeeps when new looked better than we give them credit for.

The frame got wire wheeled and brush painted; it was nice to not have to spend a fortune on paint for a change. With the body back on, the shop got a little larger.

I’m going to re-paint the hardtop so all the parts will match and to fix some errors that got past me last time.

Otto,
Looks great. Looking forward to some pictures out in the sun.

So, you are painting the top the same color? I wonder how a contrasting color would look. The wheels would have been universal beige (RAL-1002) with the Luzon stripe. I think the top in that color with some Luzon pin stripes would really stand out.

Just a thought.

I should have been more clear, all the hardtop parts will be repainted white. I'm going to use up some leftover Wimbleton White from the van two-tone.

I considered painting the wheels the same color- so it's like you're reading my mind!

The dark color seems to absorb all the light around it; I'm eager to see it outside too.
