I really like the look of pinstriped wheels on the 2A's so I thought I should do mine. I almost got one of those Buegler pinstripe tools but have always wanted to learn how to do hand pinstriping like on the old hot rods anyways. I don't know if I'd be any good at it, but I at least wanted to try. I met a pinstriper once and talked to him for a long time. He said it was easy and fun, but it takes about 6 months before you really start to show improvements. I guess it takes a lot of practice. That's ok... I got plenty of patience and the time so I thought I'd give it a go, plus it's a pretty cheap investment if it doesn't work out. After many hours on the Youtube, I went on Amazon and bought a Mack 20 series, 00 brush for 13 bucks and some Alphanamel gloss black lettering paint for 19.00. Turns out I probably should have got a 10 series brush, as the 20's are more for touch ups. Oh well... That'll be my next brush. Then I located some items I already had around the house that were suggested to get started: A clip board, glossy paper magazine, mineral spirits, mineral oil, and some Dixie cups. I set up a little practice station in my man cave which was just a big sheet of glass with a 1" grid on white paper behind it, and started practicing. Glass works well because you can put a grid behind it, and it's easy to wipe off when you're done. I've been trying to practice about 30 minutes a day and have been at it for about a week. I can do straight lines pretty well, but my curves are pretty bad. I can see how they say 6 months. I've tried my hand at some freestyle designs and most of them are so horrible, I won't show them here. I am getting better, but no where near ready to even start doing something like an old toolbox or anything I would want anyone seeing. For transparency purposes and so that I have a record of just how bad I was when I started, I decided to post my latest work right before I wiped it off. Ok, so quit looking at that... let's move on. Like I said, I think I'm pretty good at basic straight lines so I think I'm ready to try my hand at my wheels. I grabbed an old wheel that still had some visible pinstriping left.  |

Then I took some measurements and transferred those measurements to my painted wheels and put a sharpie dot where the stripe should go. The good thing is, if I make a mistake, I have a good 30 minutes to wipe it completely off with a paper towel and a little mineral spirits. It comes completely off without hurting the paint, then I can just start over again. To help my chances even more, I decided to get my wheels in an optimum position so I drug an old front axle into the garage, and leaned it up on a sawhorse. Then I took a 2 wheel dolly and some plywood and made a little standing rest that hung over the tire.   Edited by Scratch - 05 Feb. 2023 at 7:10pm |

Now I could slowly spin the tire with my left hand and rest my right hand on the plywood stand to get a nice even line. Instead of spinning the brush around the wheel, I'd spin the wheel around the brush.  |

It worked awesome! Of the 5 wheels I did, I only had to wipe off one bad stripe, when I accidentally bumped the dolly. The pinstripes came out very clean, with sharp lines and consistent coverage. I started with making a thin line where the sharpie dot was, then slowly made that line thicker and thicker. It took about 3 passes and maybe 5 minutes per wheel to get the exact thickness I wanted. I'm 100% happy with them and it cost me under 40 bucks. Plus I may have a new hobby now!   After about an hour, I put them back on the jeep and done!   Edited by Scratch - 05 Feb. 2023 at 7:13pm |

Congrats looks pretty dang good. I went the other way and bought a Beugler and made a jig that fits in the center hole to do mine. I did the five for CHUG and have 3 more to do for my off road travel trailer when it gets closer to finished. |

I don’t know. Your design looks pretty good. I’ve seen worse done by pros who were charging for their work. And the wheels look great. Keep on practicing and having fun. Von Dutch had to start somewhere

Thanks all. The Buegler tool would definitely be way faster, and I would have just bought one, but I really wanted to try pinstriping and figured I’d give it a shot first.

That looks great Scratch, good job!
I remember when working in body shops we would bring in pinstripers when cars had painted stripes. I do remember the magazines they used to draw out the paint on the brush. Your paint lines are crisp and sharp, excellent!

Congratulations. The method you used is probably very similar to how it was done at the factory.
When I worked in a Chevrolet dealership, in the body shop was a Ford Model A axle housing ( they made great jack stands and all kinds of stands) with a Chevrolet spindle and hub mounted on top with a rod welded to the bearing nut. A wheel could be mounted on the hub and the rod served as a rest for the painter’s hand. I never got to see it in use, though. Evidently, sometime in the past, they striped a lot of wheels. BW

Beautiful job on the wheels. When I striped my sister's wheels I used a similar approach. I left the wheels on the Jeep. I jacked up one side, both axles, and put the Jeep in 4-low-R to spin the wheels slowly. I held my hand with a small brush on an upside down 5 gallon pail. That allowed me to target the right distance from center. My cheap brush required about 20-25 loads of paint to get a smooth consistent line line like you got with just a few passes. buying the right tools pays off.
