Has anyone ever looked into a Ford RUG or T&C OD 4 spd?

Some spec's

Top loader type case
3.29 first gear (stock T-90 is 2.46)
1-1 third gear
.82 fourth gear (18%OD)
advance adapters has an adapter to D-18 transfer case. Allowing a Warn type OD.

This tranny with a 25% OD would give you a much lower 1st gear (lower crawl speed) and 18%, 25%, & 43% OD.

Length is short as its a 4 spd and the adapter replaces the tail shaft.
One draw back is it uses Hurst style linkage. Which if you don't get it with the tranny can be expensive. Advance carries it.
The tranny comes in two versions you would want the iron case version used in cars in the late 70's

I had a 72 Gran Torino with a toploader 4 speed behind a 4bl 351 Cleveland that made lots of hp.  JMHO, but that toploader was the equal of any Muncie 4spd I ever had.

Hurst shifters can be pricey but they can easily be rebuilt as well.  Most of the times, just new bushings and re-align it up and you're good to go.  Back in my fast car days I ran them in everything with a manual transmission including 3spds in pickups.

I never thought about using either a toploader or a Muncie from an old musclecar in a early Jeep.  I don't see either not lasting behind either a 4 or 6 cylinder in a CJ.  I just didn't think there would be an adapter to fit.

Edit:  One problem I see would be the mounting of the shifter.  Muncies are mounted on the trans tailshaft housing near the end.  I never had to do anything with the trans or clutch on the Torino, but my money would be on the shifter mounting on the tailshaft housing as well.

Maybe it's just me, but the truck RTS version even with the aluminum case seems like it would a better choice.  Top shifter so no shift linkage worries and a .78 overdrive vs the car's T&C/OD of .81.

Adding this to my list of interesting Jeep ideas.

Interesting I had no idea Herm was doing these. I actually have a T&C core I bought as a back up for the one we used in my wifes 67 Mustang. It has a couple chipped gears and would need a rebuild. I'm saving it until I am certain I don't have a use for it. Maybe some day I'll trade it to Herm for something.
