Ok, so the title is a little misleading... I'm not that guy from India or wherever that built the MB clone with rocks and hammers, but technically... Scratch is my nickname (Ask me why in person...) so there is a bit of truth in the title. I'm not really good at documenting my builds, but since I've seen so many other threads on builds, I figured I'd start one for this jeep. I got this 1946 CJ2A, (serial #77632) about 20 years ago somewhere in Wisconsin or Minnesota. Paid no more than $300 for it and I didn't even get the "ran when parked" story. I had no idea when it ran last, but it was mostly complete and the frame and body was in pretty good shape. Here's the earliest pics I have of it. These pics are at least 10 years old and it's been patiently waiting in my pole barn for it's turn at a rebuild. I'm not really one for "naming" my jeeps, although I do have an 03 Rubicon that I sometimes call "Ruby" and a '48 CJ2A that I call "lefty" both for obvious reasons. But I just call my '44 GPW... "the GPW" or "Army jeep" so I'm just not one to name my jeeps. I guess I do have a lime green '47 that I sometimes call "Greenie" although that's what I also call a booger on the end of my finger so... I suppose I'm just not very creative. When I talk to my family about my jeeps, I usually just use the year to differentiate them. Of course I do have two 46's, so it sometimes gets confusing. Although lets be real... I could just say "Jeep" to my family and they really wouldn't know (or care) which one I'm talking about. ...I feel the same way about her shoes. Anyways, I guess I don't really have a name for this one yet. Maybe one will mysteriously appear like a hemorrhoid on my ass, we'll see. So I guess this will be the start of my build thread for this little guy. |

This past fall (2021) I decided it was time to take a closer look at it. I wanted to see if the engine was good so I pulled the plugs on it and found at least one valve was stuck open. I pulled the head off, and after liberal amounts of ATF and hope, I got it free. Then I put the head back on. I still wasn't sure of the condition of the engine so I just used the old head gasket. There was an issue with the clutch also. The transmission would shift, but it seemed as though the clutch was frozen. I could see a huge mice nest through the bell housing inspection cover so I figured the clutch plate had rusted to the flywheel. If the transmission was in neutral, I could turn the engine over and after putting in a new fuel pump and a known good carb, I got the engine to fire right up. I did a compression test and was getting 95-101-104-110, plus it had good oil pressure so I figured it was useable. I pulled the transmission so I could check out the clutch issue. It was very much rusted to the flywheel, but using the inspection cover on the bellhousing, I was able to remove the 6 bolts holding on the pressure plate and could separate the clutch from the flywheel. I really like the patina on this jeep. Especially the hood and fenders. I'm torn between leaving it patina white, or painting it Harvest Tan. I really like the worn, vintage look of it, but I don't have a "restored" civilian jeep and I really want one. I decided that I should go through the drivetrain either way so my decision was to pull the tub off and start working on it. That'll give me time to decide if I'm going to leave the beautiful patina the way it is, or make it look dealer fresh. I made the decision to pull it apart and start the rebuild. First step was pulling the sheetmetal off. |

That pressure plate looks pretty heavy duty. What clutch kit is that?

I have used a few of Joe's motor pool parts & have been pretty happy with all of them. Especially the rubber rear main seal -- NO LEAK!
