Then applied some primer. I decided not to temp fate removing the exhaust manifold, and just painted it in place.  Once I made that decision, I'm pretty sure that I quietly heard the 75 year old bolts thank me.  I also left the distributor in place because it was being stubborn.

Next I started cleaning up all the smaller parts.  I used my parts washer and sandblast cabinet for that.

I recently upgraded my blast cabinet with parts from Tacoma company and it works awesome now!  It's a world of difference.  I got their cheapest kit which included a new gun, metering valve, foot pedal, gauge and hoses.

After blasting, primer and paint, I had some new and like new parts to install.

It looks much nicer now!
I wanted to going to go with a lighter color like a gray, or red or something. I do like a lighter color for engines since it's easier to see things like leaks, plus I think they just look better, but I'm thinking I'm going to go as factory as I can with this one, so I went with the color that it probably left the factory with.

By the way, I found a couple questionable cracks in the block.

I sure wasn't happy about it, but I could tell that the block was pissed!

I decided to see if and how long a good JB Weld patch would work.  I cleaned it all up with a wire wheel, ground a V in the crack and drilled a small hole at the ends.  Then acetone, followed by a heating with a torch to remove any oils.  I did the patch with it laying on its side so gravity would help.  We'll see how well it works...
I didn't see any cracks in the deck when I was in there but I guess we'll see.

My motor did not leak but had a glob of something on right below the distributor, there was a lose corner and discovered it was a jb weld patch so I pulled it off, needless to say it now leaks a little. Moral to this story ,don't pick at scabs!

Next on the list was the transmission and transfer case.  This was honestly the most difficult part of the rebuild so far.  It was so full of 75 year old disgusting crud, that I'm pretty sure Mike Rowe would have walked away from this Dirty Job.  There were so many nooks and crannies that it took about 3-4 days to clean it up! I used a combination of power washer, wire wheel grinder, wire wheel tip on a drill, and parts washer to do it.

You're doing a great job!  I'm enjoying watching your progress!  Also, thanks for the heads up on Tacoma.  I need to upgrade my blast cabinet too.

Honestly, I actually enjoy scraping off the grease and crud with a scraper or knife. I find it oddly satisfying and therapeutic.

You know, there are doctors that can probably help with that...
