I finished up the windshield frame, but didn’t bolt it down or put the glass back in yet. Now starting on the grill.

I think they are Rugged Ridge, meant to bolt into factory holes in a modern wrangler. I just mounted them where they fit best.

The grill is cleaned up and getting primed and the windshield just it’s final coat. The metal has been in excellent shape under the bed liner with only a few small places of body filler to hide some dents.

Here is the windshield and frame put back together. I was going to pull the glass and redo the inner frame, but after reading about breaking glass I decided against it. Plus, I didn’t put the weather stripping back in after spending 30 frustrated minutes accomplishing very little. The Jeep is primarily a warm weather vehicle and won’t be driven in the rain.

Looking good.  I like that color a lot too! Are you going to keep the tires?
What is the black sheetmetal? on the rear fenderwell tops?
And what is the round thing on the drivers side rear fenderwell? Access to the old fuel cell?

The PO put in the black fenderwell covers to match the tailgate when it originally sat flush over the back. And yes, that’s fill up location number two for this Jeep!

Here are three completed parts. Primer, camouflage khaki, and then a semi gloss clear coat. They’re not perfect, but anything’s better than the bed liner.

And then it was just easier to remove the fenders. Both are in the process of being painted.

The cowl and front 1/4 is cleaned up, bedliner free and primed. The liner on the tub is different from the other components. The tub is coming off in a fine dust while the hood, fenders and such almost melted and peeled off in chunks. Either way the body is in excellent condition, I uncovered some previous repairs and dents the were covered in bondo so I got to bare metal throughout. I figure the dents and backyard fix add some history to the Jeep. I’m almost at a state I can start putting it back together and finish quarter panels and tailgate later.

The paint job/bed liner removal took a little detour. With the engine bay exposed I pulled the radiator and soldered a small hole and my son welded up a few cracks in the header. The entire front is painted and clear coated, now I just gotta remember where all these bolts and nuts go.

While it looks like only 1/2 of it is done, it’s probably closer to 75%  The rest should go smoothly because there is hardly anything to disassemble.

The full roll cage installed by the PO meant the inner windshield adjustable bracket would not fit. For 3 years now I’ve been wanting to get the fold out feature back to functional again. I used gas struts with low profile brackets to get everything to fit in the limited space I had available. It only has the one position, but it works smooth as silk with both closing and opening.

I’m finished with the tub. It had a good deal of body filler covering up a bunch of dents, holes and a few old patch jobs.  I took it all down to bare metal and painted it with 76 years of character on full display. Luckily there was hardly any rust.

Phase one of this Willys extreme makeover is complete. Hair, and clothes, check. Next up is are new shoes. Any suggestions?  I’m definitely going to a 16x4.5 reproduction wheel, probably MD Juan.  I’ve read good things. But I’m still a little on the fence with tires. 7.50x16 should fit nicely with the wider front axle.  Also, any input on color choice for the wheels would be helpful.

tires: consider STA Super Traxion (which is not what is in pic below, those are std. NDTs which are also a great choice and period correct)

lotsa forum posts here on tires so you may want to do some searching.

wheel color: since you are closest to harvest tan you should consider sunset red (orange). i used Krylon Allis Chalmers Orange Farm and Implement rattle can from Tractor Supply.

CJ-2A 72586 tan (stock)
CJ-2A 197624 green (resto-mod)
