This controller looks like a later version. It's tag says "Dana, Spicer" (these Co's must have merged?)
The attatched drive shaft set-up is different than the standard hollow tube type. it looks like for a solid round stock W/keyway. It has a u-joint that tells me it probably had a carrier bearing in the shaft somewere.... Anyway here is the pto controller part No. from the '49 parts list. (I'm sure that someone will show the earlier version)
Group 35 - 05 Power take-off Front Unit
Power Take-off, Front Unit, Assembly...................Part No. 640633

Hi Gary that u joint style is what is referred to as ''pin & block''. They are used in reasonably low speed / low torque applications . There are no needles ... the 4 pins are fit into the cast iron "block'' which has the grease fitting in the center and are usually swedged or peened into the yoke so they don't fling out when the joint spins. They are /were a low cost alternative to use on a drive line that doesn't see lots of use or high loads, they were throw away items, no joint to change when they wear out . The one in you picture looks like 3/4'' bore X 3/16 '' key way slip yoke. A closer look at the area under the safety wire /set screw makes me wonder if it has been welded to the hub that its mated up to..... that sure looks like a rusty pass of 6011 to me . Who knows for sure but it looks like something that was refitted into a jeep somewhere along the way when an original failed or was lost . I believe gear reducer out put mounted at the draw bar would be the only other point of support needed in a typical cj rear pto situation . Chip

Gary I have had this nagging image all day of that mounting plate in the last picture. I just figured out why. I once built a winch for one of my projects out of a good sized industrial worm drive gear reducer. That picture reminded me of the mount I made to hold it up , (not on a jeep) I bet the group of 4 mounting pads that are close together on the left are where a gear box bolted down and the other 2 pads were the support bearing mount for the other end ... in between was a belt pulley or a winch spool of some sort . They had it jacked way up so the pto could come out above the rear frame cross member, but below the tailgate surround channel. Somebody had some big chunks steel kicking around . Chip

I have 2 of them, very relaxing and enjoyable to rebuild, 2 semi throw out bearings, 1 D18 seal, and it's done.
