Maybe I am looking at something different and confused as usual. The Mechanics manual gives a chart of speeds for a ratio difference by reversing the gears changing 20:24 to 24:20 ratio for the rear PTO gear box.

Thanks to the info Lowenuf sent me, the early box was 20/24. It had a 20 tooth input with a 24 output. The gears could be swapped side to side for a different final drive. Eventually, the box became 22/22 to meet the national standard of 540RPM only. I had an early one with 5-6 casted on  the case. 5= May, 6= 1946.
I learn something new everyday when I work on my 2A.

That would explain why the need for the decal after the change. Do you know when the change took place? My Mechanics Manual copy write 1948 doesn't list the 1:1 ratio but the 1949 Parts Manual has both listed.

I am just about to assemble my one and you can make them one of two different ratios as the internal gears are interchangeable.

Depending on the desired output speed you can change them.

So there is a high or low speed option.

If I get a chance later today I'll read the book.

Per tech bulletin 49-7 dated March 14, 1949:

Power take off - the power take off gear ratio in the rear unit was changed from 20-24 tooth gears to 22-22 ratio, beginning with Model CJ-3A Vehicle Serial Number 13639.

So would there have been a decal for the earlier one? Or just after that date. Are there identifying marks on the boxes that you know of that would tell you which box you have?

Thanks Bill, That makes things a little clearer.

Bob, I still would like a couple of the decals when you get them done.

Bob,

Not sure there were would have been a decal on the earlier ones. If you could change ratios, I don't think they would have one. My guess is, they were put on for dealers so that they knew which one they were selling. Just a guess on my part.

I'd agree with Bill there, its not a 5 minute job changing the ratio on the earlier box and its has to be pulled apart to do it.

I guess when they were supplied new they may have asked the customer what the intended use was and perhaps the dealership set them up accordingly.

I know I am late to this party, but are these decals available from anyone here? I am not too particular regarding the ratio, as my box is mostly a decoration piece anymore. If someone could provide one (or two) of these, I would be interested in making the purchase. Thank you.

bob, i am no genius by any means, but regarding the gearboxes, the 2 flavors were:

1. early models consisted of a 24 tooth and a 20 tooth gears........

2. late models consisted of 2- 22 teeth gears.......

I guess the latter would be considered a 1-1 ratio?  even though both still acquired the same final drive rpm ratio?

Well, my CJ-2A is a 1947 (#108666). However, I located and installed the box about 3 years ago, if that helps. Really would like the decal more for decoration now. 1-1 ratio would be fine, I suppose.

Thx

I made up a version some weeks ago but have been too busy to post.  I'll post them in a few minutes after I finish my banana bread.  I have the decal material, which I got for $8 at a hobby shop that has supplies for building radio controlled model aircraft.   I tried to print some, but somehow when I put the paper in water the ink disappeared.  I did also spray them with acrylic clear coat so if anyone has some comments on that, fire away.

Here are both MS word and Pdf files with examples of the text.  I had to experiment alot with fonts, bolding and font size and this as as close as my patience would get me.  There are a lot of different colours of yellow also.

To make sure these files work I just downloaded them from this site myself to print them.  Before   printing, don't forget to adjust the margins for the particular version of MS Word that you have.  I used a variety of different colours and you may also want to experiment with the colour by highlighting the font and then the circle object that is the border and going to custom colours.  The setting I thought to be most accurate was  red 240, green 225, and blue 0 as in the top left hand corner version.
Or...
I printed off a ton of these in trying to get it right.  If you want, send me a SASE and whatever donation you like, and I'll send you two or three to choose from.  Please PM me if you want some.

somehow the word document became corrupted.  I've tried to replace it with a power point version which makes it way easier to manipulate the image, but that document type cannot be uploaded here. I changed it to be another Pdf but kept power point in the title.  If you're willing to pay a ransom to Bill Gates you can get an app that will convert it into a Power point document.   I also experimented a bit with the yellow colour.  If you want to try it on your own I can give you some pointers on the fonts used, and how they were manipulated.  Believe it or not, there's at least a half dozen different fonts in there.
