CJ'ers: Anyone have a pattern for the guard that covers the exposed PTO? Or better yet, a model from a tractor that might fit.

gostby,

Great request.  Not many people use there PTOs and of those that I see less than 20% have guards on them.

Due to it's irregular shape, I don't think I'd be the guy to make a pattern for one. I think you'd have to have one in hand to shape from. Pictures are all I can share from mine. Photo of jeep for reference.
I hope this helps a little.

Tim

I have restored no less than 8 of these original PTO guards for myself and several CJ2A page members. The fact that they are "the real deal" has always been important to me and when I thought of reproducing them a year or so back another member quickly changed my mind. We agreed that rarity of some of the WILLYS items is part of the mystique. If these were reproduced then everyone would have one. If you are interested in making one for yourself I might be able to help you out. I have an NOS example I was fortunate enough to pick up for my CJ2As & could make a pattern from that.

This is an example of a PTO shield that I restored a couple of years back.
As it arrived at my place

After some preliminary messaging.

And the final result after sandlasing, replacing the tab and repainting.

This is an "original" PTO guard that was repaired. I searched, found and restored this so it has real history and not some REPRO that anyone could have.
I would be glad to help you out if it is for your use only. I sure hope you are not going to mass produce these.

timcj2a, many thanks for the photo's of the guard it's been on my wish list for quite some time. What is the purpose of the 2 holes and the bracket all the way to the rear of the guard, sort of looks like a hindge? Thanks Joe

I couldn't tell you what that appendage' s purpose is, other than when attached nothing else is mounted to it. There may have been another piece of equipment that takes advantage of the lip and two holes, however nothing that was native to my jeep when I bought it. Maybe someone else has that answer.

3-48s, I took so long to type my question I didn't see your post. I have more pressing issues to deal with on my jeep but I would definetly be interested in an original in the near future I think my jeep deserves a guard after 69yrs of faithful service. Your pics got me drooling lucky dog! Thanks joe Wadoyado

About ten years ago at the Spring Willys Reunion a guy came with  box of NOS guards that he got at a farm auction. Nobody wanted them at the auction because they didn't know what tractor they were for. He got a screaming deal on them. He was kind enough to sell me one. Smile

Keith, I've got a NOS guard I picked up at a Reunion . I'd be glad to loan it to you to make a template and spec it out. It had a tag on it but fell off , now just a tag wire. Kevin

I think the slot at the top might be for a chain link for a pto shaft guard?

I've got a guard... I was just being lazy.

I figured the tooling docs I scanned might have had a template.

I would like to have one too. If someone can come up with a template, I would be willing to cut them out on the waterjet and bend them. What gauge sheet metal are they made from?

I was confused. I thought it was a guard for the PTO box itself. I hate it when I drag mine across a rock. I've considered cutting an old O2 bottle to make a shield for it.

I just leave the flat pulley gearbox on. Neither one prevents from banging your legs into them.

640716 - SHIELD, power takeoff assembly.  It attaches to the case with 4 bolts 53777, hex hd, 7/16-14 X 3/4", shield to case, and 4 lock washers 53183, 7/16".

There is also a 640500 COVER, power takeoff output shaft, but that might be more of a condom for the shaft itself rather than the shield for the whole rear PTO assembly.  I believe this cover is depicted in the drawing 7.13 on page 118 in the PCJ book.
