Allen:

Never too late, got ya on the list for Tan.
Quote I'd even vote for you to make a set of all three: PTO, Shifter, and transfer case....
2 out of 3 are covered.  I will be making Transfer Case too, but have to get a real one in-hand first to confirm dimensions & details.

Floor shifter boot?  Were they ever leather?  For that matter, can anyone find a part number for a floor shift boot, rubber or leather?

Sean,

I recently puchased an NOS shifter boot with the part number 907107 on it. My first reprint dealer parts book from Leon Rosser has a hand written note in it with this part number for CJ2A.

That's a later year replacement.  The 900xxx numbers were way past CJ-2A production.

I guess this is supposed to be it:

664379  -  COVER, gearshift lever housing (After Serial No. 38221)

Goes hand-in-hand with:

664378  -  PLATE, gearshift lever housing cover (After Serial No. 38221)

which uses 4 screws to fasten.

It's the only cover/grommet/seal listed for floor shift.  I presume it's rubber.

Yes, it's rubber and does not feel anything like the plastic feel of the replacement today.

Some of you already know that the General has an overdrive and the OD shifter comes out the PTO shifter hole:

Sean's prototype boot:

Since it covers all of the OD shifter mechanism, it will no doubt be fine for an actual PTO lever.

Yeah, I still got the ol' "work glove" T/C boot. LOLLOL
They look good together don't they!

Sean,
I lost your email to me.  Is this one of my two boots or do you need me to send it back?

Sean,
I'll take a PTO shift lever boot and a T/C lever boot (if they come to be).

Thanks,

Jeff:

Thanks for posting the photo.  Does it fit OK on your OD/PTO setup?  I can easily make some taller ones for just that application.
Quote ... Is this one of my two boots or do you need me to send it back?
I don't need it back right away, but eventually.  It's not a final product, just for you to check fit on the OD shifter.

How does if fit at the shift lever?  Too loose, too tight, just right?

It's not clear to me what the "correct" fit at the lever should be.   All the photos of originals show a very loose fit.  I've always presumed that was due to stretching over years of use, but now I'm not sure.

3-48s sent this photo of his boot.  It's intact and still appears to be very straight (unstretched).  This would be a loose fit, so maybe they were made that way to begin with:

What does everyone think?  Loose or close fit?

Sean,
That IS my PTO/OD and it fits fine. I've not seen an original boot so I can't testify on the hole fit but I can say that it makes contact with my shifter about right IMHO to produce a cone shape that is not too tight. Any looser it may sag and any tighter it may be too tight to slip down far enough. Like I said. If the boot is supposed to stand up in a cone shape the hole diameter is correct.

Status update:

I have expand this thread to include Transfer Case boots as well, so when I do find the right leather, I can order plenty enough to do both. (see original post)

So far, 14 requests for OD, 3 for Tan (natural?)

OD doesn't appear to be a "stock" color anywhere (so far).  Has to be special ordered, and I don't know what the lead time is yet, so can't say when I'll be able to start making them.  Please be patient.

Those who have responded about the PTO boot, let me know if you're interested in a TC boot as well (sorry, should have added it all together in the first place Confused).

Sean

I knew that, was just wondering if a "standard" boot is good enough for you, or if you'd want it taller.

Looks like the bracket on the drivers side could use more clearance.  As-is, it might wear through prematurely.

I think it will be fine. I'd rather change the design of the shifter than change the design of the boot anyway.

In addition to my one PTO lever boot, I'd like two transfer case lever boots, all in OD.
