Does anyone know where I can find a blowup of the PTO (model 18 )for a CJ?

I pulled out the shifter fork and proceeded to lose a ball bearing and I think a spring. I am looking for verification and also if anyone has sizing I would be most appreciative

James,

The transfer case is a spicer 18, but I think the PTO is different. What brand PTO is it?

I stand corrected, it could be a spicer model 18H. This site is for a ramsey but they are nearly identical in design.

Let me know the brand and model you have for sure though.

When you pull the shifter back it engages. If you pull the front gear off the pto shaft that shifter fork can be pulled completely from the body if the shift handle is removed. The 18H body has a hole where that spring and ball go into. You must synchronize the 18H hole w/ the indent in the shifter fork when you reassemble. Or you just lube it and discard the spring and ball. It still works either way, just smoother w/ it back in place.

I don't know the technical terms but I think I described it so you can follow.

Then I guess he's talking about the "detent ball and spring"

I installed my Spicer Model 18H this afternoon. Glad I did, because when I pulled the lower bolts from the cover, I didn't get any gear oil drainage. Pulled the plug and got no more than 3/4 of a pint. First I've looked at any fluids except antifreeze and engine oil. Looks like I better check everything now. To think I drove it to work everyday this week to. Good thing its was just a couple miles one way.

When I drug home a E-Bay jeep a few.mo. ago I replaced the rear diff. fluid,it was old and as I smelled it it didn't smell bad, not untill it was exposed to fresh air. I can't tell you how bad it smelled there after.Changing your fluids is basic "have to do". Don't be surprised if water comes out of any or all the systems you change.Be "pro-active" in this area. The Icons are kind of corny but fun.

Then what Oakes descibes should fix you up. Also that web site I listed is as close as I could find with a quick google search. So you'll be able to get it back together.
