I did a search and found some old posts but nothing recent regarding shift boot quality. I purchased the rubber transmission and transfercase boots from one of the reputable parts dealers and only got a couple of months out of them. Has anyone recently found good quality ones and if so where.

I purchased the leather ones from Ron at the G. Great look and no tearing after a few months. I had the same problem as you did until I changed to leather.

Jeff what color were the leather ones you purchased? Gale - the ones you made yourself look awesome. I was being kind when I said I got a couple of months out of mine. I actually had 115 miles and both had tears in them.

I too bought the rubber variety with same results. Got lucky & found a black leather set on ebay.
They're about a year old now,..look great no tears. Can't seem to find who I bought em' from.
If I see em' again I'll let you all know. Al

Ask for the Australian manufacturer M.V.Spares rubber boots for MB/GPW they are very sturdy and, I think they are made out of EPDM. Ron at G503 will probably have them in stock.

I have a mid-year '46 and it has original [I'm pretty sure] shifter boots--all made of leather. I think the color was brown, but they darkened a lot when I soaked them in neatsfoot oil to soften them and keep them looking pristine. In short, I am convinced that leather is more "stock" for the early ones at least. Mine seem to have fewer square inches of leather than BKreutz's creation, and taper more near the top but I would not worry about that. He did a fine job, reminding us that we can all do just about anything for our little friend that we put our minds to. Here, we have lots of minds to help out, which is a great insurance policy. Besides, leather has personality, much more than the rubber/composition that came later.

Whoops! Wrong again. I just checked and found the following: Transmission shifter--RUBBER, smooth conical. Transfer case--sewn leather, narrowly tapered at top. PTO lever between the seats--sewn leather, narrowly sewn at the top. Would be interesting to hear if anyone else out there has what is thought to be original boots. I still have reason to think mine are, although I'm open to correction, having seldom been correct B4--exception was the brown headlight buckets matter. Mine were, and are brown, as are some others we heard from.

I have always believed that the transfer case lever boots were originally leather.

ALL boots on the early CJ-2A were leather. A continuation of MB parts, which were leather due to rubber being reserved for more important stuff (tires, etc.)
Willys did NOT document the change to rubber very well at all, so when it all occurred is still guess-work, but I think it would have been very early, since BOTH rubber & leather transfer case boots are listed in the '45 parts list. They may have been used interchangeable for some time after that though. I don't think the floor shift ever had a leather boot. The PTO boot was leather up to s/n 118629. Sean |

Serial 45208 has the original leather trasmission and transfer shift boots. I didn't know they were originally leather and though bubba had done it at some time until I removed it and found the original color paint under it... At least I hope it is original... I hope I can get the five coats of other paint off of the top of them and make them look like something.

Here are some pics of Del's shifter boots:
I wish I had paid closer attention to them when I was there.

Jeff, did you take any closeups of Lindsley Clarks jeep? His had to early style boots too and yes, they are more of a suede type of rough leather......a welders' jacket is what it reminds me of.
