This engine was shoe horned into my 1951 cj3a. Other than it was built by ford can anyone help me identify the rest of the numbers? The serial number is stamped into the passenger upper front side of the block. The other number is top of the oil pan. Thanks!

Yeah. It’s a Ford GPW engine, probably built about in October, 1942. In case you’re not aware, the GPW was identical to a Willys-Overland MB. All parts and assemblies interchange.

I concur. This engine is identical to the early CJ engines. Thus, they can not be "shoe horned" into a CJ3a. They bolt right in. Now a small block Chevy engine would need to be "shoe horned" into a CJ3a. An adapter plate, firewall cut, custom exhaust, air cleaner, wiring, engine mounts, etc, etc, are needed. Note: The GPW engine is rarer & the folks that need one for their GPW might be interested in a trade for a CJ engine they have in their GPW. Some $$ to you might be involved. IHTH, Cpt Logger.

I wouldn't describe the installation of a GPW into a '51 3A as "shoe horned".
There are some possible complications with which ever bell housing and starter are used. Also, the front engine plate would need to be the CJ3A version with a minor modification...or the GPW version with an "approved" adapter or a motor mount modification on the driver side of the engine.

Ha, you guys should have seen the front motor mount fit you would of called it a shoe horn also. The starter never functioned correctly until I identified the issue. Thanks for the responses!
Anyone looking for a GPW?

GPWs left the factory with matching serial numbers on the block, chassis, and data plate. If someone has this chassis number, they might be very motivated to acquire the original engine.

Why in the world would you suggest the G503 after a member here expressed an interest in the GPW engine? + Both the potential buyer and seller are in Colorado... I'm mystified.

There are a number of us that are on both sites, so my question would be... Why suggest ANYONE suggest someone else buy it after Bruce W (Chief Inspector of the Jeep Police) has expressed interest. I hope 19cargo42 doesn't ever submit his Jeep for Judging,,,

My bad, I read it as: Timmy wont let me have "this" instead of "his". Apologies for the confusion.
The reason I shared that link was I remember a thread several years ago on the G in which someone posted an engine and out of the slimmest of probabilities the person with the original GPW responded and they reunited the two original parts. |

Yes, I recall that GPW engine 're-union' of sorts.
a few years ago I found the original engine out of my MB that my father traded away 40 years ago. When I get around to installing it, I will take out the GPW block and try to get it back to someone that might have the Jeep it matches. There is an 'engine wanted' list on the G for this reason. It's a list of MB block serial ranges members are seeking. PS- BruceW is on the G also.
