1948 cj rear axle - While pulling off the right, rear hub, the "pop' pushed the left axle, bearing cup out of position. fine, but then the bearings were not set in place. The bearings are loose and the bearing cage seems to need some force to set in place. In the pic, I pushed on with a few bearings. now I can't seem to easily pull off the cage.

thanks for feedback. I get it now. just had a preconceive notion on the parts. Found some useful video on bearings in general.

Time to replace both the bearing and the race...unless you want trouble in your future. The seal needs replacement also. Cheap insurance...

Several things wrong with the picture.

First, no need to worry about "damaging" the bearing cage. That bearing is totally shot.

Second, you need the correct bearings, and these are "modern" enough.

Third, you need to get a service manual and study it until you know more about what you are doing.

There are plenty of u-tube videos on this procedure.  Metalshaper has a pretty good one.

Thanks. I did not find any videos with "here is a trick" for getting bearings set up in a cage and getting the cage on and off.  I will sort it out. I was just frustrated with loose bearings and not wanting to damage parts.  I will check your cite. Happy t day

Did you read my previous post?

There is no "trick" for getting bearings set up in the cage, because that is not how it is done. Probably why you didn't find any videos.

That bearing, and probably the other one too, are beyond repair and need to be replaced with new ones which will come with the bearings in the "cage". They need to be pressed on with an arbor press.

BTW, I think you have that one on backwards.
