Looking for ideas for a under the floor rear gas tank
A good source for a DJ3A/DJ5 would be good but hard to locate.

Thanks, Jim

If you do that you will loose the rear triangular brace for the rear bumper. Thus, you will loose the ability to tow a trailer. That, for many, is a deal breaker. It is for me. I use my rigs for more then parades & ice cream runs.

That being said, IIRC, the DJ-5 tank will fit with a little massaging. A friend of mine did this with either a CJ-2a or a CJ-3a back in 1975.

I am aware of having to remove the supports. Jeep did away with them in the '70's. The Jeepster Commandos' had a rear tank minus the supports. YES the frames were of a heavier gauge metal then my 2A but one can build in enough support to a least safely tow a small camper/trail trailer.  Plowing or discing a field not so well. Which is OK since I sold the disc set up long ago.

They are a very simple tank and could probably be built very easily. I have an original dj3a tank if you need measurements and pictures.

I dunno, I'd guess there have been plenty of DJs (and rear tanked CJs) pulling small utility trailers just fine.

Just because you like to tout your jeep as a real workhorse is no reason to slam those that like to enjoy their jeeps in more sedate settings.

Just an opinion.....you're entitled to yours as well.

The triangular supports are for army jeeps pulling army trailers with a pintle hitch. They do very little for a CJ pulling from the angle Iron drawbar.

Would appreciate  it  if you could snap a few pics and take a few measurements of the DJ tank. How many gallons does it hold?
thanks, Jim

Sure, I’ll try to pull it out tomorrow and get pictures. I’m not sure about capacity but you should be able to figure it from the measurements.

The basic measurements look like 13 5/8x9 7/8x21 11/16. I looked inside and didn’t see any type of baffles. A quick calculation says it should be around 12 gallons.

I didn’t know if you’d need it or not, but here’s a few shots of the tank straps and where the filler came out. Also there were two wood blocks attached to the body to keep the tank spaced down from the floor.

I put a rear tank on a M38 years ago. It was a galvanized Powder canister that was Army surplus.  It had about a 8 inch opening on the top with four screw down  tabs and still had the military stencils.  I had it standing upright in the back and plumbed to the regular tank with a shut off so when the main tank got low just open the shutoff and it would drain to the main tank.   It held 12 gal.  It was about 12 x 20 inch footprint and about 3 feet tall. It always got lookers wondering if it still had gunpowder in it.  Wish I had pix of it.  We used to go all over the mountains around Monterrey Mexico with it.
