Period photos of new CJ2As for parts reference. We've seen these photos before, but scattered about among different topics. Thanks in advance to those who contributed these:

I think I found the date this photo was taken. The photo can be found on the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library web-site where it is described as "Michael, King of Romania", "Willys-Overland", and "1948".
I stumbled on a newpaper article from The Lima News, March 24, 1948 that states "Former King Michael of Romania has accepted an invitation to visit the Willys-Overland jeep plant in Toledo, O., Mar. 21. Michael will be driven from Detroit to Toledo in a new jeep station wagon for the visit."
That places this photo near the end of March 1948.

The interesting thing is that this photo shows a Jeep with NO headlight trim rings, NO seat cushions.
One other thing, what is the component on the drivers side, highlighted in the white "gray" suited guy at the drivers side.????...Is that the mirror?

It does seem strange the seat cushions are not installed. It sure would be easier to put them on with the seat frame on the bench. The mirror appears to be turned sideways and highlighted by the trench-coat.

Sean,
Thanks for sharing that as a pdf.
On another note, looking at this thread again, Bob Westerman's "Michael, King of Romania" 1948 photo of the 2A above appears to show a factory installed "Willys lean." I suppose it could be a result of the camera angle, but I don't think so. The only non-symetrical vertical spacing that I see between left and rigt sides is the distances from the tires to the fenders. What do you think?

Thanks Sean! That's a nice brochure!
...and Sam, I noticed that same "lean" too, but if you'll notice the paint stripes on the floor, they are off-vertical (in the 2-dimensional photo), and that would lead me to belive that what we're actually seeing is a mild perspective distortion. Sigh. |

You're right Jack, there's a vanishing point to the right in that photo. The front bumper is not parallel to the fenders or anything else in the body.

I think I see in the Parts List that there are different numbers for the left and right tires!

They did that to correct the lean. That one must have been assembled wrong-side-to. That's why it's been pulled off the line. BW

I found another news article in the April 1, 1948 Toledo Times. It talks about King Michael's visit to Willys-Overland. I did go to the microfilm for this article and the date was correct

Those old Life Magazine photos were taken in my "backyard" along the old Anza Trail, and more specifically up Palm Canyon from Borrego Springs to Terwilliger (southeast of Anza) in Anza Borrego State Park. Plug these coordinates into Google Maps: 33.42204, -116.4768. They probably went up the Sage Road from Hemet to Highway 79 where Berg's Roadhouse was located. I'm not sure you can still make the drive up or down Palm Canyon anymore. I did it in the mid-1980s (up canyon in a Toyota Truck) and it was an adventure. The 1949 trip was coming down canyon which is usually easier, but looks like they had fair amount of water running through the canyon, so there could have been some hairy washouts in a number of areas.
