I doubt that is a serial number. It might be a part number but is probably just a casting number for the housing.

It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

show a photo of the box. Is it a manual or power? Does it have 3 or 4 mounting bolt holes? How many turns lock to lock? I recommend for manual steering a 525 model box. It has three mounting holes and has 6.25 turns lock to lock. Borgenson makes a great combo U joint vibration dampened. If you look through pages about 93 in my project thread you can see what I did.

There is plenty of online Saginaw information....you should be able to visibly iidentify it just by Googling it simply as Saginaw steering box id.

Jeep CJ’s used manual box #5679142 from 1972 AMC CJ through till the end of CJ’s in 1986.
So your 5671818 would be a pre 1972 box for ??? Edited by oldtime - 18 Jan. 2023 at 8:27pm |

IF the "serial number" 5671818 is actually a casting number, or an assembly number, it just might be a part number 5679142. That is my SWAG on what the OP actually has.

Here is a picture of my genuine oem nos Jeep manual box which is a direct fit for all 1972-1986 CJ’s. I am guessing that the 5671818 was from a Chevy used in the late 1960’s Edited by oldtime - 19 Jan. 2023 at 9:20am |

From the pics one can clearly see it to be a typical manual box by the standard Saginaw configuration of 3 mounting bolts. We cannot see the length of the input shaft. On CJ’s (not all Jeeps) the input spud shaft was attached to an intermediate steering shaft via a bellcoupler fitting. I’m sure some shafts on GM’s were very long. The casting number previously provided suggests 1960’s era. It has a drop pitman arm which was common to many GM applications. Myself I am not familiar with all Saginaw products. Only those used on 1970’s Jeeps to 1985 CJ. The real issue then is the ratio or how many turns from lock to lock. Jeep CJ was a slow powerful 24/1 ratio (count 6-1/2 turns lock to lock).
